Final Goodbye

Happy Doomsday Anniversary (July 8th)! Nine years ago today, we were all killed with feels. Here's something to sort of (not really) ease the pain.

The Doctor was alone again, and he had been for months. Donna, the greatest friend he had had in years, was gone, having forgotten him and all of their wonderful adventures. Martha and Mickey, he had spied on a couple times. He witnessed Mickey proposing to her, so he knew there was no way those two would likely ever travel with him again. They now had their own lives to lead. Sarah Jane had her son to take care of, so she was gone as well. Jack of course was busy with Torchwood and flirting with baristas to worry about travelling. And, of course, Rose was gone again.

The TARDIS was empty besides himself. He actually missed the company. Often, he found himself rambling on to the empty air. Once he remembered, he always fell silent and looked around. There were always some traces of his long-lost companions left behind. He liked to focus in on them when he felt alone. There was the knob that Martha accidentally broke off when turning it like he had asked. The Doctor wasn't terribly good at giving directions, and the knob was supposed to be pulled, not twisted. The stain from Donna's coffee was still on the seat. It was an awful brown mark and the Doctor always meant to clean it but he never got around to it. Then there was the myriad of things Rose had left behind when she was pulled into the parallel universe. Her clothes were still at her mother's for cleaning, but she had books and souvenirs and her bedroom all still left in the TARDIS. The Doctor didn't really go down that corridor anymore, but the thought was still there.

"Alright," the Doctor said as he stood at the console, speaking to the TARDIS. "You always seem to know what to do. Take me somewhere I'm needed."

The Doctor pulled a lever and the TARDIS made its normal wheezing noise as it launched itself into the Time Vortex. A minute passed of smooth sailing. Well, as smooth as it usually was with one pilot instead of six. Then, something odd happened. Most of the lights short-circuited. The wheezing noise got louder and deeper in pitch and the entire machine rumbled violently, knocking the Doctor to the ground. The TARDIS thrashed about, knocking him all over the place. It was like it was ripping through something to get somewhere else. The Doctor gripped the railing until he felt the final violent jolt, signaling they had finally crash landed.

The Doctor got up and slowly walked around the console, inspecting his machine. Everything seemed fixable if not already in working order, which was much to his surprise after such a ride. He tried looking at the monitor to see what could be outside, but it didn't seem to want to cooperate. The Doctor decided his only choice was to see the world outside for himself.

The Doctor actually found himself in London. It was definitely farther ahead than 2008, as the last time he saw it there were no spaceships parked on the side of the road or children playing on hover boards. There were even some aliens walking along the street, conversing and living among humans like they had been for decades. The Doctor went to a boy selling papers on the street corner – funny, the paper business was still running with all this technology. After paying the boy 55 pence, he took the newspaper and read the date. November 23, 2089. It was rather odd, considering the Doctor was sure some of this technology wasn't supposed to be available to public use yet, and he knew it would be a few more decades before aliens would settle on Earth, let alone be treated equally by everyone. The Doctor walked around a bit, keeping an eye out for oddities. Nothing seemed absolutely wrong besides the strange out-of-date environment.

Then, the Doctor saw an ad flash on a billboard posted on top of a three story building. The ad changed everything. There on the billboard was the face of a man who was the spitting image of Pete Tyler, posing next to a blown up picture of a health shake. The name "Tony Tyler," flashed on the top of the screen, followed by "Better Figure, Better Life." The Doctor stopped in his tracks, remembering the conversation he had with Jackie just a few months ago.
