She went to sleep the previous night after a couple of drinks. She hoped that all that she lived that day was just part of a nightmare. She hoped that the cat vanished and no trace of it was left behind. But when she woke up in the morning, the cat was sleeping glued to her leg, so peaceful and relaxed. For a second Rose thought that Isis looked like a normal cat, and deep it her soul she wished it was true.
She looked up at the ceiling and the warm feeling of the fire brought a smile. It felt like one of those moment when outside is raining, and she was sitting on the couch covered in a fluffy blanket. She carefully got up in a sitting position and petter the cat's head gently. The cat moved her nose a little before opening her eyes and yawning in Rose's face. Rose smiled and she realized that for the first time in a while, she slept peacefully, maybe because she was no longer alone. She picked up Isis and pulled her in her lap before putting her forehead between the cat's ears. Surprisingly, the small creature smelled like lavender.
"Morning." Rose said and moved the cat away. Isis moved lazy and made herself comfortable on one of the pillows.
"5 more minutes..." she mumbled and instantly fell asleep, making Rose laugh a bit.
Rose got up from the bed and walked to her desk. She lit up a cigarette, she no longer cared where she smoked as the house was a mess anyway. She took a deep breath and looked at the book in front of her. The cover had now silver floral like decoration. They seemed to almost shine under the morning sun.
"It's gone..." she whispered as she noticed that the metal lock was no longer in its place, being replaced by crimson ribbon that kept the covers shut. She untied it and opened to look at the first page that was now carefully illustrated. In each corner there was a rose painted in red, and framing the paper, connecting the flowers, there were vines. Her mouth opened in awe at the beauty as in the center, instead of a title there were two wings drawn. One that had feathers of different colors and one as dark as the night. She turned the page and started to read the text that took up almost the entire page.
"At the dawn of time, when Earth was just a new creation, the Gods came together to find a solution. They created a place for the living, so filled with light and love but as an inevitable twist of fate, darkness made its way there. The knew that if they intervened, they would break the promise they made in the beginning. So, they stayed in their world called Oether. At the same time, they knew that they had to do something and protect their precious gem indirectly.
They took the last golden feather and tied it close to one dark as a raven. Mixing them together, they created a creature, the balance between Darkness and Light and gave it several gifts. They gave it the power of fire so she could warm others in cold days. They gave the power of water, a giver of life. The power of air, to be able to travel along with the winds, and the power of earth so it would stay grounded and never lose focus. A combination of all elements they put into the new world, but they did not account that these were all two-sided blades. They gave it a soul so it could relate to all the living things.
They made a creature that was the combination between Heaven and Hell. Half demon and half angel. The lonely creature meant to guide the border that resided in between the seven worlds. What they did not come into account was that the creature drew powers from pure darkness as well. Blood magic being one of them.
As humans started to develop and grow, they drew its attention more and more. Slowly the creature that stayed in the shadows for so long became fascinated with the frail people that roamed the Earth. One day it vanished leaving the border unguarded and ever since then, its presence was unaccounted for."
Rose leans on the back of the chair and lets that story sink in. It sounded more like a fairy tale rather than a reality, but she knew that this book was something else. The thing that drew her curiosity more was that the book had no author.
