At this point, Goodneighbor was a second home. I made acquaintances with the staff at Hotel Rexford and some of the usuals that came through. My go-to was Daisy's Secondhand Shop for all my basic needs, and I was able to get good-quality cigarettes from William.
I had just gotten paid for doing a job for Hangman's Alley. Apparently, the Minutemen haven't been around much, and the settlers there appreciated me getting some raiders off their backs. They only paid fifty caps for the job, but I could tell they were hurtin' for money, too. They were a scrapper town whose only trade was salvage from the city. Hard to make a living when you're stuck smack-dab in the middle of the Boston ruins.
I took my caps and made my way to Goodneighbor so I could spend what I saved on my creature comforts and ran into a trader on the way. She was a fidgety sort by the name of Cricket. She let me buy a couple of shotgun shells from her for a decent price, and we parted ways.
Inside Goodneighbor, there was what looked like a cleanup operation goin' on. I saw three guys pickin' up two bodies off the pavement, and one of 'em was scoopin' up bits of gore.
I slowly walked over to Daisy's shop, havin' a hard time takin' my eyes off the confusing scene.
"Well, hello there, John. How are you this evening?"
"I'm good, Daisy. Hey, mind tellin' me what's goin' on around here?"
"Oh, there was another shooting last night. Not sure if it was some of Vic's boys or if it was part of someone else's agenda, but we lost two drifters last night. Three volunteers are cleaning up the mess now."
"'Cause city watch can't be bothered to do it themselves..."
"You're going to say something one day that's going to get you into trouble. Keep that complaining to yourself. Now, did you need anything today?"
"Yeah, some Med-X and a Stimpak if you've got it. I guess a new flip lighter, too."
"Let me check my stock and see what I have. Hmm... seems you're in luck with the flip lighter. I've got a silver one right here. And I've got two Spimpaks left, but no Med-X. My chem supply runs dangerously low some days due to all these drifters using them for recreational purposes."
"I hear ya. I'll take what ya got, Daisy."
We exchanged items and caps, and I packed my things into my bag. I told her goodbye and made my way to Hotel Rexford to see William for a pack of smokes.
Before I made it to the hotel, though, I caught him talking to someone on the street.
"Hey, William, perfect timin'," I said on approach.
"Oh, hey, John. Need the usual?"
"Yeah, whaddya got for me?"
"My stash is in the room at the hotel, let me walk you over —"
We heard a crash toward the nearby State House. Someone had fallen against the door from the other side. As it burst open, out stumbled a young blonde woman with a busted lip. A bottle of beer flew in her direction, missed, and shattered on the pavement.
"And don't you dare come back, you thieving bitch!" yelled an angry man from just inside the bar entrance.
"I won't, you stupid fatass!" She got to her feet and flipped him off.
William sighed beside me as the woman stormed off. "She's gonna get herself killed."
"Who the hell was she?"
"My sister. This is the fourth time she's been kicked out of the bar this month."
"You mentioned a few times that you had a sister, but I've never seen her before."
