"Did you hear about that little girl that moved into town with her baby sister?" asked Nick.
We were standin' on an upper stands balcony, leanin' on the railing with some cigarettes in hand.
"Nope, I don't keep up with most current events," I replied.
"Well, word is, she's fourteen and her sister's only five. She managed to procure the building for sale by the main gate. The big one, big enough for a family of three."
"Since when did you take an interest in teenage girls?" I poked.
He slapped me on the back of the head.
"Ow!"
"You knucklehead, would you get your humor outta the gutter? Anyway, they were hauling a large printer into town in a red wagon. A little girl who carried that — and only that — into town yet had enough caps to buy a two-bedroom building for her and her sister intrigued me, so I talked to her yesterday."
"And?"
"She said her father wound up dead one day. So she did some good old-fashioned investigating until she found out that her father's superior had him killed to shut him up. Undercover plot to let raiders take over the town as long as he got a cut of the action, and her father found out about it, see? She brought it to the public to get him banished from town. She took her father's emergency savings to Diamond City and decided they would open up a printing press. Mayor loved the idea so much, he didn't hesitate to let her buy the place by the gate."
"Huh. A little girl did all of that?"
"Yeah. She's gonna be one hell of an investigator, I can feel it."
"Is that a hint of admiration I hear? Heh heh."
"Absolutely. Anyone who can take on the role of avenger, investigator, homeowner, mother, and journalist all at the age of fourteen deserves respect in my book."
"I'm interested in what she's going to write about."
