Me and Payton just sat in silence. It wasn't an awkward silence though. We both were smiling. She kissed me again. I wasn't sure if it was because I was being pitiful and she felt bad but I didn't really care. It felt good to have someone who genuinely liked being around me. And wasn't focused on work all the time.
"I'll go get the food pay, you don't have to walk down there if you don't want to. It's kinda cold out" I said breaking the silence.
"No I'll go with you hunter it's fine" she smiled
"You wanna walk or drive ?"
"Walk"
"Ok let's go then"
Me and Payton left my apartment and started walking down the street. Again we were silent but it wasn't awkward. She had a small little grin on her face. It was cute. I was happy to and for a moment I had forgotten about all the difficult confusing stuff that's been going on lately and the only thing that filled my mind was her. I have to be careful about this though. She's just around me for work. And I'm not in a good place and neither is she. She did just break up with her boyfriend. She's probably just as vulnerable as I am.
We both stopped at the curb and Payton pushed the crosswalk button. She leaned up against the pole and looked up at the sky.
"It's a beautiful night" she breathed
"It is" I followed her gaze
I brought my stare back down to her and smiled. She was really pretty. How did I not notice before ? as I stared at her my focused blurred and I noticed a big marque sign behind Payton's head. Just behind her and up the side street a little there was a lite up marque sign that said liquor and below that it said open. I was stuck looking at this sign. Something about it seemed so familiar. I felt like I could almost feel the heat coming off the lighted sign and I felt like I knew what the inside of the store looked like without even going in it.
"Hunter ? you ok ?" Payton asked snapping me out of my focus of the sign.
"Yeah, yeah I'm ok. It's just that sign" I said
"The sign ?" She swung her head around "what about it ? it's just a liquor store sign" she giggled
"No no I've seen it before."
"Well duh hunt, you live right up the street"
"No it's not like that." I said
"What's it like then ?"
"Like I've been under it, and inside there ? I feel weird Payton. Really weird. Like déjà vu. This whole scene. The fact that it's dark and this sign being lite up I've been here before. When would I have come here ?" I asked more directed at myself than Payton.
"I don't know hunter but our light is green. We should go" she said
"Ok. I guess your right. I do live up the street. And it's been awhile since I've been down here."
"Yeah that's probably it. No c'mon. I'm hungry" she said locking her arm with mine.
We walked and picked up our food and walked back to my apartment. On our way home I stole on last look at the sign. Why did that seem so familiar ? it bothered me and it gave me this empty unsettling feeling. I hated this. I couldn't remember shit. It was so damn irritating. I tried to focus on something else. We reached my apartment and Payton sat comfortably on the couch
"Hunter you ok ?"
"Yeah. I'm just...well I don't know actually. I feel weird Payton."
"Weird how ?"
