"Sam, Sam?" My mom asked. As I woke up, I realized that I had fallen asleep.
"Yeah?" I said still not quite awake yet.
"I was asking you about your day." She said.
"Well, uh...,you know it was alright, I may have kinda failed my test....."Before I could finish, I felt the ground rumbling. We looked around when a bright flash of light come from the windows. I looked out the window and saw our neighbor's house crumbling down, with fire blazing over it. My mother screamed, I felt the urg to scream too. We turned on the TV to see what was happening. The weatherman started explaining that we were having a solar storm and that solar flares were coming down."Come on we need to get to the shelter." My father said calmly. I'd always envied the way he stayed calm. So we started to run to our underground shelter in the backyard. As we were running, a solar flare came down and went through our ceiling, hitting my dad. As me and mom screamed, we flew away from the blast.as i started getting my bearings, I saw my mother under heavy debris. As I was heading to help her, the roof started falling down. I dodged my way to her and fell down at her side.
"Run Sam!!" My mom said. "I can't do it mom!" I cried. "You have to Sam. You can't die here Sam. Remember i love you, now," She grasped and with her last breath said, " run, Sam!" As I cried I obeyed. Feeling like a coward. Suddenly I gasped and jumped out of bed. I woke up from the nightmare I dreaded each night. I could still hear her last words, "Run Sam!" and I did.
It's been 2 years since then since the rest of my family died earlier, I live at my best friends house, Johnny Wilcox. Sometimes I wish I would've stayed at my house, but that's not what mom would of wanted. I looked at the clock, 5:00, still an hour and thirty minutes before I had to wake up. Well I guess I'll just get ready now and maybe watch some tv, I said to myself.
When I finished getting dressed, I headed down stairs to get some breakfast. As I was eating, I grabbed the remote and turned on the tv. I looked through the channels, then I found the news. It was on the weather, great. The weather man said we would have a clear, sunny day.
"That's what you said last time." I muttered to myself.
Mr. Wilcox came down the stairs doing his tie.
"Oh, hey Sam, good morning!" He exclaimed. Mr. Wilcox works in an office. One thing that I especially like about him is because he's so humble. You don't see that everyday.
"Hey Mr. Wilcox, how's it going?" I asked.
"Oh I'm fine, and how many times do I have to tell you, call me Fred." He said with a smile.
"The day you start calling him Fred, the day I start paying attention in class." Johnny said as he walked down the stairs.
"Johnny you look terrible." I joked.
"Thanks Sam, you look good too." He laughed.
"So why are you up so early?" Mr. Wilcox asked Johnny.
"Well I think I'm sick, but mom said I'm just faking." He said.
"She is probably right." I said.
"Ok fine you drive a tough bargain, I will go to school half the day." He said.
"Johnny. Go get dressed." Mr. Wilcox ordered. Johnny groaned and trudged up the stairs.
A little while later the bus showed up. Me and Johnny were ready to go. Now I bet your thinking, why can't Mr. Wilcox drive us there? Well he has a tight schedule, and Johnny says its uncool.
"See you boys later." Mr. Wilcox waved.
"Bye Fred." I waved back.
When we arrived at school, it was crowded with high schoolers like usual. Me and Johnny went to our lockers first. I was putting up my books while Johnny was eyeing this girl.
"Johnny stop making a fool of yourself." I rolled my eyes.
"Sam come on your such a drag," he added, "you act like you're my mom!"
"I'm just saying, this is school, not hunting season." I joked.
"Oh you just had to make this weird." He replied.
"Hey guys, what's up?" Rachael chirped. Rachael is a good friend that Johnny introduced me to.
"Hey Rach, nothing much." I said. As the class bell rang, Rachael said, "Well I'll see you guys in gym class."
"Bye." Me and Johnny said in unison.
Gym class came around, and as we sat down in our seats, the last of the class came in and the teacher started to talk. When we got in the gym we saw Rachael on the bleachers with the rest of the class. She waved us over.
When the coach walked in, everyone became silent.
"Ok class, today we're going to play some basketball in teams." He said.
"Oh no, basketball, I'm dead." I groaned. I wasn't a very good athlete. I mean i play football well, but just everything else i suck at.
"Don't worry Sammy, just relax." Johnny said with a smile. When the game started it was actually fun, but I should have known it was too good to be true. As I passed the ball as hard as I could to another teammate, a bully's face catches it instead.
"Your dead Waterson!" Douglas, the bully, screamed. Douglas was the meanest bully since I could remember, and did I mention he hates me? The bell rang and Douglas bumped into me. The gym teacher was close though. Douglas noticed that.
"Waterson, you will get what's coming to you." He said.
After school, me, Johnny, and Rachael were walking home. Rachael only lived a few houses away from me and Johnny. Johnny and Rachael went into a fast food place, while I waited. "Hey help me!" Someone screamed. I started running towards the cry for help, Douglas and his friends came into view on the other side. They had a kid a little bit younger than me. As soon as they saw me they dropped him.
"Hey look what we got here boys, Waterson you ready for your beating?! My eye is swollen because of you! I'm gonna teach you a lesson you and the rest of the school won't ever forget." He screamed. Then, two of his thugs grabbed Me from the arms, while he came at me.
"Woah, come on let's talk about this." I said.
"You are hardly in a position to bargain, Waterson." Douglas laughed as he threw a couple punches across my face. I fell hard to the ground. Then I felt my insides heat up, I was starting to get mad, I had no idea what was going on. The more angrier I got, the hotter I felt, When one of the thugs grabbed my jacket hood, he jerked back in pain.
"What the heck man?" His eyes widened in shock.Douglas came around and kicked me in the face, hard. My fingers twitched. He kicked again and again. My fingers were twitching so much. Then i just let the heat out. Then my twitching fingers stopped. I felt strength, as my index finger touch the ground, a wavy line of fire started to chase Douglas. Then suddenly Douglas' shoe caught on fire. Douglas screamed and ran. As his gang fled, I wondered what happened. What was that, I wondered. I looked down at my hands as if they were to explode.
Something like this happened about a year ago, long story. Let's just say I never thought it would happen again, especially not like this. Johnny and Rachael came running into the alley.
Then my friends saw my face. " Sam what happened to you?" Rachael asked
" Douglas and his buddies, real nice guys." I sighed.
" Well are you ok? We saw fire." Johnny asked
" It's a long story, hey I gotta go I will see you guys later." I said quickly
" Hey Sam, you look terrible, just stay." Rachael said
"I can't guys. Really i'm fine." I say and take off.
