You may be wondering where I went next. Well it was not Johnny's house that's for sure. I went to an abandon train yard, close to the edge of town. There I sat and tried to think of an explanation for what just happened. I started to make excuses, but I knew the truth.
A doctor that examined me after the solar flare said that I may have been affected by the radiation. So that's what I think happened. I don't get why I can do what I can do. I was still having a hard time believing it. When I just didn't want to think of anything anymore, I ended up going back to Johnny's.
When I got back Johnny was on the couch, like usual, seeming like he forgot what had happened earlier. I rolled my eyes and trudged my way upstairs to do my homework. I didn't know how late it had been until I just fell asleep on my desk.
At school the next day, after second period, something strange happened. The wall to the far side of me started to rumble. I was at the water fountain when the wall exploded. My body flew back, slamming me into a wall and knocking the wind out of me. As I looked up to try and find the cause of the explosion, a person jumped out of the dust and slammed me back down.
Douglas growled, "I told you, you would get what was coming to you." I sat there staring at him in shock.
"How?.." I mumbled, too shocked to speak.
"I was just lifting weights to blow off some steam because my girlfriend just broke up with me. I lifted the heaviest I could go, which was 245 pounds. It was like lifting five pounds. I lifted heavier weights, it was like nothing. I don't know how it happened, don't care how it happened. Point is, you always made a fool out of me, opposed me, and now I'm going to teach you a lesson." He said with a smirk.
I gulped and got up slowly, then, using the last bit of my strength, I kicked him away and ran for it. Some may call me a coward, but if you had a guy that could punch through walls, you'd be running too. I looked back and I didn't see him. But as soon as I looked back in front of me, I hit him dead on, and it felt like I hit a wall! He grabbed my throat and squeezed as hard as he could.
My eyes started to bulge.
"You just don't get it, do you? You can't win, I will always be better than you." He taunted, spitting in my face.
I was not going to die like this, I wasn't going to quit. Anger started to burn in my chest. I felt it, the heat just like the day before. Then I realized what triggered it, anger. It felt unnatural, like it was an internal force, but how could I do this? This isn't me, but I would die if I didn't do it.
As I battle with myself he just squeezes harder, so I make a decision. I scream and think about the hate, the fire, and the situation I'm in, and I feel hot, really hot! All in one moment, like time froze, I can see my hands glow. All of a sudden, he flies away from me. I dropped to the ground gasping for breath. When I look back up, what I see is very frightening, not a scratch on him. How? That's impossible! I can shoot FIRE out of my HANDS! He slowly got up and growled hatefully.
"Oh, this is going to be fun." He said, cracking his knuckles.
He started to charge at me? I didn't feel like I could do that again, so I sidestepped him, tripping him in the process. He recovered quickly and sent his forearm my way, this time hitting me hard. I flew backwards and hit the floor. I got up, but it was too late, he was already there. He grabbed my neck and lifted me and tossed me to a wall like a rag doll.
I knew I had to make a move soon. I recovered before he could reach me and slid under his legs. I tried to blast him again, but I can't, nothing happens! He steps towards me, I try and try but I'm not angry.
"You can't win Waterson. You aren't special. You will never win, you are a failure." Douglas scoffed.
Then I felt it harder than ever. The way my life was, how my family died, the way my life is ruined and how he's making it worse. Right now I was blaming him for everything. I see a bright light, and so does Douglas. For once he looks scared, but I wasn't. Even though it reminds my of that night my life changed forever.
But it feels familiar. I am not afraid because that light is from me. My hands are glowing very bright, aimed at Douglas. He looks at me, his last look of hatred. Soon the light becomes too bright to see, and I black out.
--
I am running so fast, explosions and screams surround me. I run till I reach somewhere safe. But being safe has a price. I had to watch the sun flares destroy everything, I couldn't take my eyes off. I cried till I couldn't anymore, I had lost everything. The worst part of it was I listened to my parents scream of agony as I ran away.
--
I wake up in a hospital. I knew I had just had a dream, but it felt so real. It happens every night, my reminder of how I'm still living. I hate it though. It reminds me of what I've lost.
The doctor comes in, "Oh, your awake, good."
"What happened?" I ask.
"You were near the explosion, or one of them," He explains, "you have a concussion and quite a few bruises," he continues,"but no burns. You were very fortunate Mr. Waterson. Oh, there are some people here to see you."
"Ok." Was all I could say.
Just then Racheal, Johnny, and their families come through the door.
"Aw, man, you look bad." Johnny smirks.
I smile."Are you ok?" Rachael asks.
"Yeah, I'm fine, just a few bruises, and a.." I faltered, they brought a gurney by, carrying a bruised guy with a huge burn mark on his chest. Douglas! He looked barely conscience, but was still able to look my way. That look of hatred, still on his face.
"What, what's wrong?" Rachael wondered.
"Oh, nothing. It's just a concussion, everything's fine." But I knew it was far from that.
