Paul knocked on Sonny's door. "Hey Sonny? Can I come in?"

There was no reply. Mr. Rosenberg asked Maddy to stay out with Sam, walked into her bedroom without giving a peep to Maddy and closed the door shut. Maddy and Sam stood on either side of the door and shared an awkward, thin-lipped smile.

Maddy broke the silence between them by asking in a whisper, "How bad did I fuck up?"

Without wasting a second, Sam looked at her and whispered back, "I've only seen a scowl like this on her face when somebody made fun of her. Whatever she did in return to them was so bad that those people literally moved to a different country."

"Oh god. ...When did that happen?"

"When she was 10 or 11 I think."

"Fuck..."

At that second, they heard Sonny whine, "But I don't want to talk to her!"

The next second, the door opened and Paul walked out. The tall, mildly buff, annoyed man looked at the girl on his right and said, "All the best."

Maddy muttered a thanks and took a step to her right. To her devastation, she saw her Teddy brooding in a black hoodie on a pink bed in the unlit blue-walled bedroom. She wouldn't even look up at Maddy, she was too busy looking at the moon.

Maddy looked back at Sam, 'Should I go?'. Sam gave her a reassuring smile and a soft nudge forward on her back. Maddy took two steps in before closing the door and softly said, "Hey Teddy!"

Still looking away, Sonny softly growled, "Don't call me that."

"sorry..."

Sonny was seated on the end of the bed that was closer to the window. Pointing at the opposite end of the bed, Maddy asked, "Can I sit here?"

No reply.

She took that as a yes and sat there. Maddy didn't know how to start the conversation, the words just started bubbling out of her mouth in the fear of what was to come. "I listened to your mixtape!"

"..."

"It was really nice! ...Can I ask you a question? ...Why were you afraid in Stage 2?"

That caught Sonny's attention. She turned to her left with eyebrows scrunched nonchalantly and said, "What??"

"...you said you were afraid to ask me out in the description. Why?"

"Well..." her voice softened, "there were two things. One, nobody knew if you were into girls or not and I didn't wanna embarrass you or me. Two..." She harshened her tone and resumed, "I didn't wanna make myself a target and become like my brothers. I didn't wanna repeat history and give my mom another heart attack."

"Oh... sorry."

One of the voices in Maddy's head was right, Sonny didn't want to see her. Sonny knew Maddy was incapable of apologizing, so she accepted the fact that she would have to make peace with what happened between them on her own no matter how much she hated it. All she wanted was just a week to forget everything that happened between them, everything that she now regretted so that she could keep her promise.  "Are you done? Was that all you wanted to tell me?" she asked keeping her eyes on her hands.

This side of Sonny was scaring Maddy.

I want to run.

This feels just like Nate.

Hahahaha

Run

Maddy got up quietly to leave.
