MARIA VERONICA HERNANDEZ, MOSTLY JUST KNOWN AS VERONICA OR VEE IN HER MOSTLY white hometown, is class president and on the school newspaper. While everyone thought she had it figured out, she didn't. She knew she couldn't fail, cause her parents aren't rich and this is her opportunity. Her parents owned a Mexican restaurant, which surprisingly the community loved, despite their racist comments. Her father worked at the factory in the other side of town, her oldest brother Julio, is currently doing his surgical residency at one of the best hospitals in America, the second oldest, her sister Marissa, she is a bio engineering, her other sister Liz, is psychiatrist, and doing a PhD program, while her brother Sam, who is four year older than her and closest in age, was studying engineering, her parents expected nothing less from their children.

Veronica was expected to go to college, that was the way up, the American dream. Her siblings did it so she was expected to do it, no other way in her parents eyes. The only who seemed to understand her struggle is her cousin Javi, who also knew that college was the only way, or he would have a job at the factory across town waiting for him, working with his father and uncle. Which his family did not want for him, they didn't sacrifice leaving their home country for their children to have a minimum wage paying job.

That the disappointment would be big, the American dream their parents fought so hard for them, for them went to go to waste. While her parents had hopes of Veronica dating someone within her own community, being one of the few family of color in the mostly white neighborhood had her chances really low. Her parents weren't exactly thrilled of her dating Junior Sullivan. They like the boy, but don't want him holding her back from her true potential, from the big things she can accomplish.

Veronica has never felt so much love for someone that she isn't related, not until Junior. She thought it was crazy, to have so much love for some, and want the best for them. Especially at such a young age. It worried her sometimes, especially knowing how some boys would treat girls, after they broke up. She'd seen it with her cousin, and she liked how her and Junior are, how the work well together.

He isn't perfect, but he doesn't mistreat her, he gets little things that reminds him of her. Is a gentleman, and despite them dating for a year, he still acts like they're getting to know each other. When she's worried or she feels her anxiety getting the best of her, Junior helps her through it, she can do it herself but it's nice having someone to look after you. It makes her heart skip a beat. She also knows that her cousin, Javi would give Junior a nice beating if he takes advantage of her or speaks of her in a unflattering way. Javi acts more like an older brother than her cousin, despite the two having a two month age gap, with Veronica being older.

VERONICA DROVE HER CAR, ONE OF HER SIBLINGS OLD CAR, THEY GAVE IT TO HER AFTER they bought a new car. The old car they all had used to go to and from school, practice, and whatever the hell they did, was so bad, old, very old, and it caused more problems than what it was worth. Veronica pulls up to the Sullivans home, to find her boyfriend outside. It could only mean his parents were fighting, or Liv was fighting with Lori.
