The humid clouds swept down to the ground of the earth. It was wet and dark from the approaching thunderstorm, but Skylar and her team still had to play. This late summer game was one of the few left that they had to play before the semi-finals. The whistle blew. Her wet cleats skid in the dark slippery mud from the rain that showered from above. She played defence on her soccer team, was a team of boy except one girl. That one girl was Skylar.
The ball was being run with up the field towards Skylar’s net. Skylar set her eyes on the one who she will cover. His number was fourteen. Skylar knew who he was. He was bestfriends with number ten on her team. She could tell that by the way they usually act with each other before a game. Skylar really didn’t like number fourteen, but it was ok, he didn’t like her either. She knew that he didn’t like her because sometimes she would overhear him while he’s with his team. He would tell them how “annoying” she is, and how frustrated she gets him, because she is always right on top of him, never giving his teammates a chance to pass him the ball. Her plan was the exact same for this game. So far, he was never passed the ball.
Rain started to splatter harder upon her tight ponytail which was becoming soaked and loose from the salted water that would fall from the deep black sky. A larger boy from the opposing team started sprinting towards Skylar’s net with the ball. Number fourteen went running down the other side to get passed the ball and shoot. This team always does this play, so Skylar knew exactly what they were going to do. She started running with number fourteen, but not in view so the larger boy could see. The boy passed number fourteen the ball, but just as it was being passed, Skylar intercepted and kicked the ball high and far down the field, just before he obtained it at his feet. Number ten on her team retrieved the ball and shot it in the net.
The rain started pouring harder and harder, and the droplets thickened. Skylar saw number fourteens eyes start to pierce through her soul. She turned to him and saw him breathing, deeply; heavily. The raindrops and sweat dripping down his red, cold looking face could no longer be told apart. The rain has becoming more intense than she has ever seen rain pour before. Suddenly, a lightning bolt strokes the white metal post. The referees blew the whistle telling everyone to go home, and they would reschedule the game for another time. When the lighting hit, Skylar slid out from under her feet, and covered her head with her arms. Fourteen just starred at her, with his feet planted on the ground, not even a flinch. His face was expressionless. It was scary and fighting the way his eyes watched her, with such little expression on his face.
Another lightning bolt hit. Fourteen's feet still managed to stay planted, and Skylar again covered her head with her arms, and kept her body flattened. He now seemed a bit satisfied at Skylar’s recklessness. She was full of mud, and she was soaking wet from the rain. She decided that now would be a good time to get up. She started to get up by going on her hands and knees. Her hands sunk into the cold wet mud. It was dark and the rain continued to pour and grow harder as it did, but Skylar could manage to see the eyes of her ruthless opponent…staring at her. She just tried to ignore it.
Number fourteen walked closer to her, as she was on all fours. He put his foot on her back. His muddy cleats dug into her back. She was still. Didn’t move. The rain kept pouring, and it started dripping off of her face. Her fear was growing, and he could tell. He let out a chuckle.
“You’re scared, I know it. Good. You should be scared. It’s time for me to be the shining player that I am, that I have been trying to do. I was almost there until you joined the league. Now it’s time for me to prove once again how great I am, and no one will stop me. Especially not some weak girl like you. Now, be a nice little housewife and get back down on the ground. Oh, and don’t even think about defending against me at the re-match. Got that doll-face? If you do, there will be trouble, and I don’t want such a pretty face such as yours to get hurt, ‘cause that’s all that would come from it.” He said this in a rude tone. Harsh and crisp. She never talked to anyone on any other teams though, so she bit her tongue and kept quiet. She was tempted to say something back, but the fact that she doesn’t talk to people on other teams held her back. Instead of responding, she just tried to at least rebel a bit. She tried to get up, but his cleats just dug deeper in her back. Her hands slipped forward in the mud, and she went splat into the wetted black dirt.
