Doubt

“It’s ok, your with me, you don’t have to worry anymore,” he said as he was stroking her soaking wet hair. They were sitting in the mud, dirty, wet, and cold, but she didn’t care, she felt safe. He had his arms around her, and he held her close to his chest. Through her tears that poured down her face, she started to hic-up.  Her breathing was slowing down, but her head still pounded, and her stomach hurt when she would breathe.  She tried to look around the forest, to see if she could see him, number fourteen, but she didn’t want to move.

“Is he gone?” she asked with her head down.

“Well, I don’t see anyone around, but who exactly is ‘he’ anyways?” he responded with questioning eyes.

“Number fourteen, from the other team, I can’t really remember his name, but it was number fourteen,” she said through her tears.

“Wait, Gerick? Gerick did this to you?” he pushed her away from him a bit, and now he was looking into her blue flooding eyes. “I’m sorry Sky, but I don’t think that he did that, I mean, are you sure?” Skylar looked deeper into his eyes in disbelief. How could he not believe me? She thought to herself.

“Of course it was, I know it for a fact,”

“Maybe you hit your head too hard or something, but I think you’re confusing him with someone else, I really don’t think that it was him.”

     “I’m telling the truth…”

     “I don’t know,”

“but Toby!” she said loudly in a high pitch whisper.

“Skylar,” he started, sternly, “I better get you somewhere warm, and dry,”

“Toby no, you don’t believe me? Toby, I’m not—“

“Let’s go,” Toby started getting up, and stretched down his arm to Skylar to help her up. She just stared at him with the feeling of doubt. It was a horrible feeling. He didn’t believe her. She couldn’t comprehend it. I know we aren’t the closest friends, she thought, but he could at least believe me.

They just stared at each other. Toby standing with his arm extended in her direction, and Skylar plopped in the mud, still starring back at him. Hurt. She didn’t want to go with him anymore, didn’t feel safe with him. Toby trusts Gerick, and she couldn’t risk anything. The rain was still coming down and she didn’t move.

“Last chance,” he said. She still didn’t move.  He started to back away slowly. Her eyes filled again, and she could feel her face getting hot. She wanted to go with him, she wanted to feel safe with him, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t find the strength to get up, and she couldn’t find the trust to give him now. She just sat there. He started to speed up his backwards pace, and finally turned around and started walking away. He occasionally hopped in a run to get out of the rain faster.

She just watched him. She felt so alone. She knew that Gerick was probably gone, and she saw Toby just leave her like that. She watched him until he was no longer visible. When he was out of sight, she knew that he wasn’t coming back. She felt some regret, that she should have went with him, but if she did, what would have happened? She would just get more attached to him, and when she would have something against Gerick, he would deny it. She wanted to be able to tell him everything, but if she did, he would probably just report it back to Gerick. He would tell Gerick everything, all her weaknesses, all her frights, all her plans, she couldn’t let that happen.

She started to cry again. This time she cried because she was alone. Her mouth smiled in pain. She sunk her face into her hands. Her tears stopped but she breathed like she was crying.

She was alone.

She fell to her side, and calmed down. The rain started to stop. She curled up into a ball, and put her arm under her head like a pillow. She closed her eyes, and tried to relax. She didn’t want to move, no matter how much she wanted to leave that forest. She was aching too much. Her eyes were extremely heavy, and she began to start to sleep. The pounding in her head lessened as she drifted into a sleep. Skylar slept, and got into a dream. In her dream, there was her, Gerick, and Toby. They were all sitting cross legged in a circle, on bright green grass in the middle of the soccer field. It was very bright, and there was not a cloud in the sky. The beauty and the brightness made this dream hard to believe it was real, but Skylar couldn’t tell while she was dreaming.

There was a binder open in the middle of them. Inside of the binder, there was lined paper. There was a lot jotted on the paper, so Skylar couldn’t tell what it all said. She could see a few words and sentences. “challenges”, “heart break”, “be led on”, “don’t  let her know”, “be secretive”, “love”, “love and face the pineapple”, “baseball bat”. These were all some of the words and phrases that Skylar saw. Some didn’t make sense to her, well; they all didn’t really make sense to her. She understood what they meant, but not what the meant to her directly.

Skylar started leaning in towards the book, when Toby slammed it shut. He looked angry at her, but then his expression changed.  His face softened, and his eyes grew happy. His mouth started grinning and his eyes changed again. She looked at Gerick and he was grinning as well. Their eyes both eyes pouring with evil. Skylar fell backwards onto her elbows. Now she was at the edge of a cliff. They started to crawl forwards towards her. She couldn’t move any further back, or she’d fall, so she kept getting closer to the ground. They were both right over her now, and they both pulled out sharp ended knives. The ground now slanted, and they all started to slide down into a huge pit of fire. The boys didn’t care, but Skylar was so nervous. She had butterflies in her stomach, but they weren’t good. They were falling fast. She wanted to close her eyes, but couldn’t. Then toby jabbed his knife into Skylar’s side, and Gerick jabbed his into her leg. There was a branch on both sides, but not one in the middle. As they were falling, toby and Gerick took hold of a branch each. She tried to even just grab there leg or something, but when she did, they both just kicked her. She fell further and faster down now. No way of exiting it. She landed hard on the ground. Not in the fire, but the fire just surrounding her. Now she was caged. A metal cage. The fire closing in on her. She didn’t know what to do. She just sat with her knees at her chest, and the fire started to get to her. It burned her skin. It hurt her. She could feel the pain spreading as it started to consume her. Then she saw their faces again. Just staring at her from the outside of the cage. No expression. Just faces. Toby’s mouth started to move, but she couldn’t hear any sound come out. She couldn’t make out what he was saying. Then she heard a gunshot and they were gone.

Her eyes flew open. She quickly sat up. Where was she? She has never been here before. She was wrapped in a blanket, and laying on a couch which she is now sitting on. There was a table with a cup of coffee on it. She couldn’t remember much about the night before. Her eyes were tired, and she was full of dirt. She started to remember that she fell asleep in a forest, but then why is she waking up in a house? Who’s house? She started to look around, for pictures, or maybe a familiar backpack. Nothing. Where was she? She heard footsteps. Now her curious mind of where she was turned into terror of knowing. She didn’t want to know. She was scared. She held her breath and her heart began to increase. She held dearly onto the warm blanket.  The floor creaked. He turned the corner. She was scared, but even more confused. Only one thing crossed her mind. Confusion.
