Chapter nine
Skylar's face filled with panic.
“Hello?” Toby answered the phone.
“Hi, I'm just checking up on you, I heard you were at the hospital, how's Skylar doing?”
“Yes we are, and how did you get that information?” Toby responded
“Well Garrick came home in tears and told me everything,”
“Well what's going to happen now? Is he going to be arrested?”
“When I went out with Garrick to try to find the person who did this, he was already gone, we couldn’t spot him anywhere. We are doing our very best, and we have submitted a profile so people know who to watch out for, but yes...once he is found, he will be arrested”
“Wait what?” Toby asked, puzzled, “I mean Garrick…is Garrick going to be arrested?”
“Why would Garrick be arrested, he did the right thing and came straight home and told me that there is someone out there who just stabbed Skylar and Mark, and we are trying to do the best we can to find him,”
“...but sir, Garrick is the one who did it, I saw it with my own two eyes,”
“Toby, I think that all of this stress of your girlfriend being stabbed and your best friend being stabbed is getting to you. Garrick was a mere witness…listen Toby, if you start remembering things more clearly later on tonight, give me a call back. Or when your well rested and something with a little more sense pieces together in your mind, I'm here. I've got to go now, I've got a call, talk to you later Toby.”Toby hung up the phone, set it down and sunk his hands into his face. He groaned. Skylar starred at him in confusion.
“What's going on?” she asked him, “what was that all about?”
Toby took his hands away form his face and looked back at her. He clasped his hands together and put them against his mouth. He looked at her and removed his hands from his face and placed them on his thighs.
“Toby…”
“Garrick told his dad, that he was just a witness… he played it off that he was as frightened and as in shock as I was and gave them a profile completely opposite of himself. They think hes completely innocent,”
“What!?”
“That’s what I said, it makes not sense. He came home, told his dad that he saw someone stab you and Mark, and they went out looking for someone that doesn’t even exist. Now the police have a false profile and Garrick's going to get away with everything,”
“Wouldn’t they come and ask us and Mark for a profile too? This makes no sense, why would they believe Garrick?”
“They think that we are just under so much stress that we don’t know what we are talking about, and they probably think that Garrick does because hes seen enough cases with his dad that he knows how to handle things better,”
“What are we supposed to do now?”
“I don’t know, I was thinking that I should go talk to-“An alarm went off. ‘code blue, room 316, code blue, room 316'
Skylar's face turned more pale than it was.
“Isn’t that Marks room…?Toby got up and ran towards the door of Skylar's room. He looked in both directions and saw a swarm of nurses running down a hallway perpendicular to the left of him. He walked down the hallway in a quick pace and turned right. He saw the room number 316 and many nurses crowding in and around it. There, just laying there. His best friend. A nurse walked over and closed the door. Now he couldn’t see at all what was happening. He leaned against the wall beside the door and slid down. He crossed his arms over his knees and berried his face in them. His sleeves were being soaked from his tears that came rushing down. About six minutes later, the flat rate still hadn’t picked back up.
Toby stood up and walked slowly back to Skylar’s room. When he was far enough away from the door what he hadn’t heard was the sound start to beep back up to a pace. It was slow….but it was a beat.
When Toby reached her room, he walked in and sat on the chair. He placed his elbow on the arm rest and held his face in his hand. Breathing irregularly. Skylar saw the pain Toby’s eyes had suffered. Tears started rolling down Skylar's face.
“Was it….”
“Yeah,” he said, before she could finish her sentence. He already knew that she was going to say that, “they were trying to revive him, but for six minutes…..still nothing happened. No heart beat. I figured that after so long of trying….they would just give up…so I came back here, so I can tell you…”
His words trailed off into a whimper followed by more tears.
“Its all my fault. I should have just stayed with you, if I did, then this wouldn’t have happened. He wouldn’t have crossed paths with me, and..and Garrick wouldn’t have tried to stab anyone, and none of this would have happened…and I, I just feel so guilty,” she said trough her tears. She tried to continue.
"No," Toby interrupted, "its my fault, I shouldn't have let you leave. Then I would have been able to protect you myself if he came back to my house....or at least not be able to find you,"
They both when on and on about how they felt that it was their own fault and continued stressing themselves out.
Two nurses wallkd down the hallway passed Skylars door. Skylar and Toby grew silent after running out of things to say.
"That's was a close one Lynda, wasn't it," said one nurse
"Yeah....I wonder what happened. Something serious I bet.. Dr. Jakes wanted to personally test him,"
"Well, the only time Dr. Jakes wants to work on a patient alone, its what there's intentional poisoning involved." the other nurse said. The two, Skylar and Toby, shot a look at each other.
"Wait a second..." Skylar said.
