Chapter 13
The odd boy quietly grunted as he sat up rubbing his bald head with his burned fingertips. He winced in pain as he stroked his head gently. His expression was serene when he looked at the world around him. He had this calm quiet aura surrounding him that it made Siren intrigued more. He touched the grass below, feeling it's soft texture and caressed the ground as if it was more fragile than himself.
Suddenly he pulled the grass below, roughly tugged the ground as if he wanted to escape. Panic immediately surged out of him changing his serene expression into fear. He grunted noisily imitating a wild animal that's fighting to be loose. He was in complete hysteria that it made him look mad in front of Kane and Siren.
Siren held Kane's arm. Her face mixed with confusion and fear. She wanted so much to calm the boy but she also felt that anxiety deep inside her longing to be free like the boy across her. It took a few seconds before he calmed down. He crouched slowly, hugging his knees and sobbed quietly. He hummed a familiar tune that poke Siren's head, her memories scrambled as it searched for the familiar tone.
She can't help but stare at his strange tattoo painted on his head. The written words was tattooed queerly that it barely looked like words. The S that started the word Silent was bigger than the other letters almost crossing over the whole word itself. The other letters looked jumbled and lost but had a few spacing to form words that could be barely read.
"Silent Wisdom," whispered Siren as she walked slowly towards the boy. "Who are you?" She asked, her face filled with curiosity.
The boy slowly looked up and stared at Siren. His eyes were bloodshot red that it made Siren think twice before moving away. There were still tears visible on his scarred cheek that it looked painful when it fell down. His expression was calm although his actions were struggling to break free. His hands twitched and his body shuddered.
He opened his mouth and tried to speak but it came out as muffled screams. He rubbed his throat while screaming, trying his best to form words but nothing came out until he finally let out a short squeal before stopping. He cried again but this time his face didn't show panic instead showed sorrow.
Siren slowly moved to caress his shoulder, wanting to tell him that every things okay but she herself knew that it would sound nothing but lies. As she reached for the boy's shoulder, he suddenly shook Siren and roughly swayed her, his mouth opened and closed as if forming her name quietly.
Kane troubled by the sudden scene, quickly moved between them as he pushed the boy away. He reached for Siren's arm and glanced at her shoulders. It formed bruises as her skin swelled in pain, she winced.
"Are you okay?" Kane worriedly asked.
"I'm fine," She answered with a grimace. "He knows my name."
Siren lets go of Kane and walked towards the boy, her fear replaced by courage. One more time. She thought to herself, betting that the words Wisdom painted on his head would mean something important. With only a small space keeping her and the boy apart, she muttered softly. "You can't speak," Kane coughed hoarsely as if silencing his laugh. "Okay fine, obviously." Siren rolled her eyes.
"Do you know why were here?" She questioned the boy as he shook his head, his eyes stared at her as if he had thousands of thoughts. "Do you know where we are?" She asked again hoping this time he would say yes, almost immediately the boy shook his head but then nodded. Confused, Siren looked at Kane who searched for something in the trees.
After a while he came back and held a long stick taken from a nearby branch. He carefully handed it to the boy as he spoke. "Here use this,"
The boy quickly pulled the grass below him and rubbed the ground to reveal dry soil below. Quickly he wrote on the ground as his eyes focused on what he wrote.
I know a map out of here, the soil formed from below.
Siren glanced at Kane, his face full of worries. "How do we know we could trust him?"
"We don't, we just have to trust our instincts."
"What if he leads us to our certain death? Those machines brought him here, we can't just trust him," He whispered the last few sentence quietly at Siren.
"What if he was sent here for a reason?" She stared at Kane, she didn't want to argue with him considering he was her only company in this peculiar world.
"A reason to kill us." He said, his tone sounded frightened.
"We can't just stay here and pretend we belong here. Don't you feel it Kane? Like this whole place seems wrong to you?" She pleaded. The place did look warm and safe but Siren still can't help but feel an odd pinch below her stomach.
"Fine. Just because I'd be alone in this place without you and that weird dude over there," He said as he looked at the boy on the corner who stared at the grass below.
"We have to know his name," Siren said as she approached the boy.
"What's your name?" She asked as she took the stick and handed it to him. Carefully he held the stick and wrote on the ground below.
Lucas
"Lucas," Siren whispered.
Suddenly a painful ache shot across her head, wincing in pain she crouched on the ground and pressed her temples tight. Memories came past her as images of the boy rushed through her mind. Something familiar was aching to pierce through her memories wanting to make her remember but the ache she felt made her want her memories to stop searching.
Nausea came from her stomach making her sick than she already was but then it ended suddenly leaving no trace of the ache she felt a while ago. She felt better in the instant she wanted her brain to stop searching for her memories.
"What's wrong?" Kane approached Siren as she touched her cold shoulder.
"There were visions about this boy who looked so much like him but as soon as I could recognise it, my head ached so much." She whispered to Kane, staring at his wide frightened eyes. "but it just stopped. The ache stopped almost instantly it was gone."
Lucas suddenly coughed hoarsely breaking the tension between them. "We should get enough water and food before we head out." Kane said as he looked around him. The place surrounding them was quiet and still that it made Siren's arms shiver. There was no wind and the air felt rather humid than before.
As if suddenly, there was a change of scenery. The sunlight gleaming below them was covered by dark shades of foggy air, overcasting the place around them. Siren walked closely trying to find Kane's hand but was shocked to feel a slimy hand holding her. She let out a sharp cry, screaming her throat off. What was that? Siren questioned herself, still feeling the slippery slime that fell down from her hand.
The fog slowly disappeared as if alarmed by her scream. A big tall dark figure appeared in front go her as the hazy air slowly passed away from her sight. It had a head as huge as clouds above the sky and in it grew tall pointy horns on each sides. Its body taller than the towering trees surrounding it and it walked closer to Siren, its feet quaked the ground below as it approached her.
Siren trembled in fear as she figured out a way to escape the terrifying creature. Keeping her eyes above, the monster opened its mouth revealing four big sharp teeth and its tongue slithered like a snake. Its body was filled with scales that moved against the strong wind. Its red dark eyes stared at her as if hungry to eat its prey. Siren stood up and looked at the ferocious monster that stood across her. Slowly and steadily she walked away from it and bumped into a huge tree blocking her exit.
