Chapter 11

The Darkness was maddening.

There was no hint of sunlight nor any luminescence that would help Siren see. The room around her was hallowed that it left no comfort for her to sleep or rest in. The cold cement was still the same dire floor that held Siren on her first night. She had counted the days since they trapped her inside the dark room although she wasn't sure, she kept track of time by the number of meals they gave her. She was given three meals per day and so far she received thirty-five.

Siren sat still; her hands around her fragile legs as her long dark hair brushed her icy cheek. She chose to look down her feet instead of the area surrounding her. Her first night was the last time they opened the lights. She inhaled the cold air, at least she was relieved she couldn't see the numbers painted on the walls.

A ray of light flashed across the corner of her room yet it wasn't enough to brighten the blackness around her. Siren squinted as she looked at the gleaming light. Slowly she crawled across the room, towards it. She heard a quiet grumble on her stomach as her knees touched the cold surface.

She stared at the object across her, there was two small bowls placed on the small tray. The other bowl was filled with white gooey liquid while the other was filled with clear water. There was a small wooden spoon placed beside the tray. As soon as she reached for the spoon, the small opening closed at her, leaving the room pitch black once again.

She felt the warmth of the spoon on her cold fingertips. She touched the floor in front of her, trying to feel the round shape of the bowl. When she finally found the bowl she took the wooden spoon and placed it inside the gooey liquid. As soon as she placed the spoon on her mouth, she tasted the bland flavour of wheat and water mixed together, despite the tasteless flavour the grumble of her stomach was soon tamed again. Siren drank the liquid filled bowl and left enough water for the next meal to arrive.

While she waited, she carefully lay down on the freezing floor. Her hands beside her head as she imagined it to be a soft warm pillow to comfort her. Loud footsteps could be heard outside the room when soldiers passed Siren's door. Although the sound startled Siren it soothed her knowing she wasn't alone in this dark place.

She shut her eyes and went into a drowsy sleep. She dreamed about her family walking beside her as the air of her world magnificent blew across their faces. The warmth of her father's hand made Siren feel relieved of her pain as it slowly faded way. Across the green fields she could see Aiden, Cierra and Lucas walking towards her. Huge smiles showed on their faces as they waved excitedly at her. Siren let go of her father's hand and ran towards her friends but as soon as she reached them, Lucas was gone.

"Where's Lucas?" She questioned Aiden, who shrugged his shoulders.

"Who's Lucas?" Cierra's tiny voiced was slightly raised in curiosity.

"We don't know anyone who's named Lucas." Aiden said as he reached for her hand. "Come on let's go!" He pulled her hand and pointed at the direction which was filled with green grass and towering trees.
