I look at the titles of the books and see they are all about "fairytale" creatures. One was titled wolves. Another was dragons.
There were demons, bear shifters, vampires, and ghosts: they even had an angel book.
I found the fox book and flipped through it. It was mostly information about how to shift or the behavioral patterns that shifters get from their animal companions.
As I flipped through, a picture caught my eye. It was the family tree I saw before. On a closer look at it, it was updated. But it had me with a family of my own.
That can't be right. It says I'm with someone named Levi. And it said I have kids.
I closed the book and look at the other ones. One book seemed to stand out from all the rest, even though they are all the same color and seemed to be all part of a group.
I picked it up and saw it was a demon book. It was black with black markings on it. The marks were rough to the touch. "Demon" was sprawled across the front in red letters.
"Do you know what this is?" Cane startled me when he spoke. I had forgotten I wasn't alone.
I look at him and shrug. "I don't know. This is what my mom had in her house."
He grabbed one of them and flipped a little. "These are the royal collections. It's said that all royal families have their own set. This seems to be the fox set. Judging by the fox book being bigger. In each family, the corresponding book is bigger than the rest. But why would she have them if she wasn't royal?"
I looked back to the one in my hand and traced the ridges. A royal set of books. "Why are there sets of books only for royals?"
"Well because it records history. And the royals are the main stories told in history. The books have family trees, and important dates, and they're enchanted so the family tree even tells the future. It'll say who the family gets with and how many kids they have. Even as babies. But there is only one set of books for each family."
I picked up the fox book again and flipped until I got to the tree again. I looked at all the details this time. My name was on it. My mom and dad were on it. Does that mean I'm part of the royal family?
When Cane saw what I was looking at I heard his breath catch in his throat. "You're a royal? How could you be a royal? That's impossible."
"I don't know. But for now, that's enough. I've learned enough about myself for one day." I put it down and picked up the demon book. "Maybe I'll be able to read all of these and figure out more about the world."
He picked up one and a picture fell onto the floor. When he picked it up, it was of my mom with other people. There was a man, a woman, a young girl, and a boy that looks a little older than my mom in the picture.
The man had salt and pepper hair. He had dark eyes that almost looked black. He was buff despite looking to be in his fifties.
The woman had blonde hair, green eyes, and a slight scar on her cheek. She seemed to be smiling the biggest.
The three kids were standing in front of the man and woman, the boy in the middle. The girl I didn't recognize was taller than the others. But seemed younger. She had brown hair and brown eyes.
The boy was almost as tall as her. He had red hair and green eyes. His hair seemed like fire. My mother was the only one not smiling.
Her face reflected sadness. It was like all the smiles are forced.
"That's the fox king. When you're officially Luna, you'll have to travel to all the royals. That's who makes up the council. But before you go around and see their lands and people they will come to you. They have to approve of you. It's not like they've ever not approved someone before."
