16 - the weathervane wallowing

that vile coffee scent hit his nose the second the boy opened the door, he wasn't bothering with the starting speech. it would be the same as always. and as he noticed a man sat in one of the back booths he was glad he had done. the man in a turtleneck and shirt sat reading a book, one that didn't look like it was from his bookstore. he was reading something about dark arts whilst sipping on a cup of black coffee, looming in bitterness. even when peter knew the said black coffee had three sugars.

"peter. come sit." the man motioned as he looked up, noticing the boy. peter smiled as he walked over. shrugging of the grey jacket, as he dropped into the seat.

"outreach day, huh?" he asked as he noticed the boy's solemn appearance and the wave of nevermore students. the boy merely grunted in response.

"and you got weathervane, how unfortunate.'' theo practically laughed at him, noticing the rather grim look on his face.

"mr belfiore, mr nott." a voice spoke and peters head turned to find the red haired thornhill stood at the table.

"who are you?" theo asked as peter rolled his eyes as he watched xavier walking up to the shop as well.

"i'm marylin thornhill."

"right. and have we-" he nodded, raising a brow. this was the weird one peter told him about. so he said anyway.

"we have not met before, i see you and peter in here all the time. black coffee, three sugars that you add yourself?" she spoke, cutting him off before motioning to the drink. oh, she really was weird and he wasn't dramatic. theo merely fake chuckled as the women motioned for peter to go to work before she walked towards a table with a white haired woman. odd little women indeed. he said his goodbyes before meeting tyler at the counter. he was cleaning a bit of spilled cream.

"missed a bit." he laughed pointing to the cream on the boy's arm, tyler chuckled as he wiped the cream from his arm.

"peter, working at the weathervane? why aren't you excited?"

"you'll see."

"there's a box with aprons and brown polos in the back. wouldn't recommend wearing a polo, they kind of stink.'' tyer informed him as he pointed into the back door of the shop. peter made a gag noise causing the freckled boy to chuckle as he disappeared into the back of the shop. the coffee scent was stronger here. bags of coffee littered on shelves. there were so many shelves. as well as boxes. thankfully he had written 'uniform' on the side of one of the boxes. he took tyler's advice and only grabbed an apron. he'd be fine wearing just the white shirt anyways.

"i don't want you hanging around that belfiore boy." he heard the sheriff speak as peter went to leave the room, hiding behind the door as his ears pricked up his name.

"why's that?" tyler sneered, quick to defend the boy he could possibly consider a friend.

"because i ordered you to. i know of the belfiore family, and nothing good came from the name." the sheriff's face fell as he recalled what that name had done. he knew of the belfiores, all too well. ghat name had pulled his wife franciose to her own grave. and he wanted tyler to be far away from those kinds of people. before walking over to the headmistress of nevermore who sat in a booth.

"could have warned me about him." tyler spun on his heel, having heard the door open as he glanced at the coffee shop doors. a long haired solemn painter entering.

"oh yeah, thorpe's here." peter smiled, as he too motioned for the boy.

"talking about me, huh belfiore?" xaveir commented as his face lit up in a smile as he reached the counter. only to gain a blank stare from tyler and a not so amused glance from peter. but he never answered, instead turning to blank stare at him as a girl called for them. peter turned to find a couple of nevermore girls.

"what can i get you?" he asked grinning. they were pretty.

"a vanilla latte and chai latte." one of the girls grinned, a bright smile lifting onto her face as he nodded, looking to the other girl. he knew of them, lily and taliah. the two girls were opposites yet so similar. he seen them lingering around school, the siren and the animagus. a fish girl and a girl who could turn into a cat.

"nice chat, peter." xavier commented as he headed into the back at tyler's orders, seeing him talk to two pretty girls irratated him. and he didn't know why. the boy's demeanour had changed at xavier's appearance in the shop. clearly didn't like him either. while xavier changed, tyler started giving him the rundown.

"the machine is actually quite simple to work, you just click on the specific button for the drink. the hefty part is refilling them because it's all under here." tyler informed him, showing him how to work the coffee machine. pressing hot chocolate and the chocolate liquid started filling up the cup. tyler opened the drawers under the machine to find tons of wires and tubes. different kinds of coffee, chocolate powers. and the milk cartons. before xavier joined them, tyler informed them of what syrups were which. the powers of decoration and the kettle where the tea was made.

"why is he jealous, were you friends?" tyler asked as they watched xavier clean one of the tables at the windows.

"xavier isn't jealous, he's annoyed."peter spat as he cleaned up the sauce he had spilt.

"and why is that?"

"because you're a normie." he replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"nevermore kids and their prejudice. why don't you act like them? are you even one of them?" tyler questioned, he leaned against the counter. his head tilted to the side, he looked almost like a puppy.

"yeah well they think the same thing. my mum was a normie, they think i'm half or less then them.'' peter sneered practically scraping away at the table as he dragged the towel back and forth.

"you're not, you're just as weird as the rest of them." peter slapped the boy with the towel causing him to roar with laughter. also causing a dirty look from xavier. he's still sulking, obviously pretending to clean as he wipes the same spot three times.

"i think my mum's name was belfiore, who know we might be related." tyler laughed thinking nothing of it as he disappeared into the back to grab another milk carton to be refilled. now this was new information. tyler's mother had a belfiore name, was she related to his belfiore's? or was it just another family? he took the mental note to look into it. if tyler's mum was related to the belfiore's, then that explains why the sheriff is so questionable around peter.

"hiya wednesday." peter spoke as the cold air lingered into the coffee shop, he turned from practising the vanilla swirl to see her standing there. a slightly amused glance on her face.

"black tea?" he questioned and she nodded, gliding over to the notice board as xavier did loops collecting empty cups. when he too spotted the girl.

"i thought you were supposed to be in the pilgrim world.'' xavier spoke as peter swirled the tea bag in the cup. picking up glass and leaving them on the counter.

"i deserted it while my sanity was still intact." she added as she too joined the two boys at the counter.

"oh yeah? you want a coffee? it's one of the many perks of this wonderful assignment." and as he watched peter pushed the black tea towards the girl.

"peter beat you to it. and i'm actually here for tyler." she spoke, lifting to take a sip of the red hot liquid. wednesday liked both coffee and tea. both black of course. but something about tea was better. like a luxury to coffee. peter's black tea reminded her of the tea gomez would make her before bed when she was younger. peter couldn't help but snicker as the look on xavier's face fell.

"i told you he was bad news." he spoke, peter sipping on his own drink. a mint hot chocolate with cream and chocolate sauce.

"twice. but who i speak to is my business."

"it's a good thing she can make up her own mind then, isn't it xavier?" wednesday looked at peter before signing the bell. tyler appeared from the back. he hadn't known what to expect when he entered the front of the shop. especially when wednesday addams, xavier thorpe and peter belfiore stood together. none happy to be near the other.

"you rang? want the usual?"

"no peter made me tea. i need help." and with that peter too disappeared into the back of the shop. he didn't want to be involved this time. unluckily xavier was always here.
