34 - fire will rain.. when i rise

'if you want answers, meet me inside the crackstone crypt. midnight.'

the note before him reads. and he slid the note under the door before making a dash for the stairs, hoping the girl wouldn't open the door to try and catch the person putting a note under the door. everyone else minus the two girls, and himself were already preparing and heading towards crackstone crypt. it is already ten forty five. he has time to walk back to his room, he didn't exactly fancy walking through the woods and into a dead man's rest in just trousers and a shirt. no. he needs a jumper. he takes the familiar walk back to his room, never more has he missed his phone. he could be listening to music right now, singing along as he walks the halls. he could be listening to 'the great war' right now. but instead, he walks along. the air of nevermore stinging at his skin. as he walks, he finds himself adirming the paintings and pictures littering the walls. god he wished they could move like the story theo had told him, the mad man had explained moving paintings. he wanted these to be like those from his stories. looking up at the picture of rowan, he wished he could smile at him one more time. he found himself looking up at the photo of the boys of the dorm, wishing that they were moving like they were moments before the picture. back when peter was a nobody. back when he had rowan, and rowan had him. he stared, imaging the image moving. peter stood beside rowan who was grinning ear to ear after winning the dorm cup. only last year. remembering how xavier had impulsively thrown an arm over peter like he did with ajax beside him, back when xavier hadn't even known his name. the other boys mingling, some just finished playing football. others with dirtied knees from play fighting in the gardens. and he continued back to his room. which was barren of the presence of xavier thorpe. his purple jumper rested on the chair of his desk. peter smiled. an open sketchbook laying on his desk. the picture sat ever so prettily. boy stood. facing sideways away from the viewpoint of he at. dull green eyes painted with stares. reflecting. it was like the moments on the balcony. 'a sky full of stars, and i was looking at him.' he ignored the short gasp of breath, the double beat of his heart. 11:11 stared back at him on the clock, he made a wish and ran for his jumper which sat folded on the bed. the brown material wrapped around his fingers as he n for the crypt. pulling the jumper on as he ran. stumbling and tripping down stairs. disappearing into the woods. wishing he had brought a flashlight as he guessed the direction. eventually seeing the shine of a light behind him. wednesday was heading straight in the direction of him. he was late. he noticed a boy standing in the moonlight by the crypt.

"peter, hurry the fuck up!" he hissed. peter ginned, grabbing the boy's hand as xavier pulled him inside. only leaving footprints of them. something that wednesday had immediately picked up on. following the steps into the crypt, where even her torch seemed to dimmer through dust.

"whoever you are, show yourself. try anything and you'll lose limbs." he heard the drawl of wednesday speak.

"happy birthday!" came next. thegroup appearing from behind the coffin. peter only realising he still held xavier's hand as he attempted to jazz hands. yet he never pulled away. something the longer haired boy gleamed at. the grip tightened and somehow peter's fingers grew warm. much like the cheeks of the boy. the effects of xavier thorpe. simultaneously starting to sing happy birthday to the gothic girl.

"i should have known you were behind this." she speaks, turning to thing. who sat swinging it’s fingers happily with the little party that peter had made it.

"i thought my cake design was pretty inspired." xavier spoke, the pig tailed girl spinning on her heel to look back at them. glancing down to the cake. death stood over a dead body, holding a pink balloon. blood everywhere even splattered on the balloon.

"the pink balloon was my little touch." enid commented. as she held out the cake. as if it weren't obvious.

"and mine was the crime." wednesday felt the slight tinge behind her stone look. the cold faced girl twitched slightly as enid offered her a wish. the eeriness of the crypt grew stronger, a slight drop in temperature. only noticeable to those paying attention. and wednesday spun on her heel. finding a plaque with candles above it. she took cautious steps. holding the flashlight out. the words in ancient font. latin.

'pluet igne cum surrexero'

"fire will rain.. when i rise" she speaks, nearly correct. the direct translation is it will rain fire when i rise, but peter's not about wednesdays bubble as she concentrates.

"okay, that's not really a wish." enid speaks, glancing down to the cake. the sparkler candles quickly burning to nothing.

"the first part of that phrase was burned onto nevermore's lawn. it can't be a coincidence."

"wait we're never eating that cake? are we?" wednesday glares before turning back to the phrase. the melted candle frozen in time. the drips still waiting to drop. she brushes her fingers against the rough stone, before she draws to a stop. neck craning backwards. vision. peter rushes to the girls side, pulling xavier with him as wednesday falls backwards.she remains frozen. for fa to long. the excitement of the party long since died down. people leaving. one of the boys from biology steps forward. flicking his finger upwards. the body of wednesday floated up lightly. peter would forever be amazed by the powers some nevermore students have. and he got stuck with one of the most useless abilities of all. a plant ability. to control the withering of things. pathetic. his father had been right. of course he was.
