Guess what guys...WE'VE MADE IT TO THE LAST CHAPTER TwT
I sit up slowly. I've been awake for hours, but I still can't seem to fall asleep. I look at Audrey and Zero. They both look so peaceful when they aren't bothered by anything other than sweet dreams. I stand up, careful not to make too much noise. I don't want to disturb them.
I swiftly cross over to the edge of the trees. We had set up camp by the edge of the woods. The night breeze ruffles my hair a little and I shiver. It's not that cold, but my pajamas are only shorts and a t-shirt. Not really noticing (and not really caring) where I'm going, I start picking my way back towards the collapsed Mithril Towers.
Only when I stop by metal shavings do I realize where my feet have taken me. Even absentmindedly I still think of the events that happened before. I crouch down by the place where I found the orange crystal. It's still beneath some of the broken foundations. I lift it up slowly.
This is it. I think. This small thing cost me one of my friends and my entire purpose for being here. I almost laugh out loud at the absurdity of it. I can barely see any of the stars because of the smoke still curling above the Towers. I stand up, crystal in hand, and walk over to where I last stood with Ian.
"For the first time in my life I had friends," he had told me. A part of me wonders if he still cares. It had to mean something to him, right? No. I crush the small spark of hope that flares in my chest. It's an unwelcome feeling. One that I wish would never-
"OW!" I shriek. I stubbed my foot. "Crap...wait, what is that thing?" I bend down with one hand on my throbbing toes. It's a small but heavy box. It almost looks like a walkie-talkie. I pick it up and inspect the blinking red light on the top of its antennae.
I think my heart stops for a second. I have to remember to breathe. Because this, this amazing lead may be the key to finding Ian and retrieving the scroll. Just like that, the hope I had killed before comes roaring back.
I mumble into the night, my voice carrying away into the wind.
...
"Ian, you amazing, stupid idiot. You left a tracker."
