SHADOW: A poem by Jeremiah Aminu.

There is a shadow within me
that debases my moral psyche.
Like a descriptive discourse,
It exposes my darkest thoughts.

Like a wave in the sea, it washes away the good in me.
Like a foe, it brings out the worst in me.
It sits like a beeping bomb waiting to explode,
bringing out my insecurities and ego.

There is a shadow within me,
watching my every move like a watchman in a dilapidated dark dome.
It camouflages itself, waiting for the right time to strike;
the right time to catch me off guard.

Can I repress my shadow?
Can I resist its tempting song that drains my soul?
Like the song of a siren, it produces a dangerous euphony that draws me into the depths of depravity.
Like a hammer repeatedly hitting an anvil, it tries to reshape my personality.

Perhaps it is a gift,
Perhaps it is a curse,
It might be a general phenomena,
or perhaps a vague enigma.

Like a damaged wheel, it exposes my imperfections.
Like a parasite, it depends on my incivility.
But I have come to realise,
I am my shadow and my shadow is me.
