At lunch....
Everyone stops to stare as Caleb flings spaghetti at a furious Principal Isa.
Principal Isa: Caleb! Stop it this instant or--
Caleb: Or you'll kick me out of the hall monitor program? You can't fire me! I quit!
Caleb hurls more pasta at her.
Sammie: Caleb! Don't do this!
Isa wipes pasta sauce off of her face and regains her composure.
Principal Isa: You're long past firing, Caleb. I'm contacting the school board to have you expelled!
Sammie: Expelled? But we were all involved!
Principal Isa: Not a sound out of you, Sammie, or anyone else!
Sammie nod sadly.
Sammie:.....Yes, Principal Isa.
Principal Isa: That's right. Now, Caleb, you're not to leave this room until the floor is so shiny that I can see my own reflection! And once you're finished cleaning, you are hereby suspended, expulsion pending.
Caleb:.....Yes, Principal Isa.
Principal Isa: Now for the rest of you. As punishment for your atrocious behavior, the winter formal is officially cancelled!
Maria: No!
Payton: Principal Isa, you can't! I already picked out the perfect--
Principal Isa: You should've thought of that before you started throwing food, young lady. Now, everyone, I have an expulsion request to file. Get back to class before I put you all under in-school suspension for the rest of the year!
Sammie and her friends pack up their things and scurry silently to Fifth period. Sammie's next classes each drag on for what feels like a week. Finally, the bell rings and it's time for her last class of the day....gym. She pass by the cafeteria on her way there and see Caleb wiping down a table.
Caleb:.....
Sammie (thinking): (What do I do? I shall wave at him.)
Caleb waves back, and she can see him smile slightly for just a moment.
Caleb:.....
Sammie feel someone tap her on the shoulder and turn around to see Autumn.
Autumn: I'm sorry to say this.....but, Sammie, get to class.
Sammie: Yes, Autumn.
Sammie slink off to the gym and take a seat toward the back. Everyone around her gossips in hushed voices about the food fight. The room goes silent when Coach Isa comes in, pushing a cart with a TV on it.
Coach Isa: Hey, everyone, I've got special treat! It's movie day in gym class, and I've brought my favorite! SPACE JAM!!!
Half the class groans, half laughs, but Coach Isa doesn't seem to notice either side as he starts the movie. A few minutes in, he's so transfixed that he doesn't notice anyone talking. In the back, a group of kids start playing on their phones.
Sammie (thinking): (Aw, what the hell am I going to do? This is ridiculous. Sniffs)
Her mind wanders back to Caleb in the cafeteria....
Sammie (thinking): (Caleb.....)
Sydney: Hey, Coach Isa, could I go to the bathroom?
Coach Isa: Uh, okay. Here!
He signs Sydney's pass without ever taking his eyes off the screen.
Sammie (thinking): (I bet I can sneak over to help Caleb without Coach Isa even noticing! I should....aw, what the hell? I shall wait until after school. On second thought, Space Jam isn't a bad movie....)
