"Mom?" I stepped back from my front door after running into the woman.
"Y/N? Oh, you're okay. " She sounded worried as she brought me into a tight hug.
I stiffened up from the sudden squeeze. My parents were great. They were just a little protective.
"Um. Yeah?" I was confused. Why would I not be okay? "Where's dad?" Usually, they come here together.
"He's in a meeting." She paused for a second, "you haven't seen anything strange, have you?"
"Strange?" I glanced over at the clock, "mom, I have to go. Like right now, so I'll talk to you when I get back, okay?"
"But honey..."
"I can't be late to this mom." I rushed past her and to my car. Before I got in, I yelled back something else, "My friend is going to put on Halloween decorations later, so don't call the cops on her."
"Come back soon." My mom seemed worried. She is more worried than she usually is.
I waved before getting in the car and driving off to my destination. Music played, so the car ride wasn't quiet. Music helps me relax, so that's another reason I need the melodic sounds.
Soon enough, I found myself outside the gates of Smiths Grove. A large fence made of concrete surrounded the area. It had barbed wire all over the top. Only one gate was the way to get in or out.
I pulled up to the gate and rolled my window down to press a speaker button.
"Welcome to Smiths Grove. Visiting hours are canceled for now. Call 217-529-9268. If you have other intentions, press 1." An electronic voice spoke through the speaker. It was hard to hear, but I could luckily still understand it. There was a card reader right next to it, so the people who work here could get in without any trouble.
I pressed one and waited a few seconds. While waiting, I looked around to see security cameras watching me, along with my surroundings. It made me question getting this job. If the patients in there are really dangerous, is it worth it? I'm already here, and this is a great opportunity, so I might as well.
"Hello?" A male voice spoke through the speaker.
"Hi, I'm Y/N. I had a job interview today." That's when I realized I forgot to call to make sure my interview was still on. It should be okay, I doubt anyone would mind if it was rescheduled.
"Come in." The voice was monotone as the gates in front of me opened wide.
I drove through to see a small parking lot. There were about ten to twelve cars parked around the place. My car joined them as I parked. The building was tall and plain white. It looked like it was pure white at some point but faded over the years.
Very few windows could be seen, and the few that I could see had metal bars covering them. This place looked more like a prison.
Clean glass doors were the only entrance I could see. One was smashed and had tape covering it while the other stayed intact. Was that from the escaped patient?
I stepped through the working door to find myself in a lobby. It was also pure white with a few chairs and a front desk. Everything else was blocked off by gates. One security guard stood by the large gate that led to the patients, along with a single man working behind the desk.
"Hello miss. You must be Y/N." The guy behind the desk spoke.
I walked up to see a messy desk with many papers and office supplies scattered around the place. The man himself had black hair along with dark brown eyes. He wore scrubs that were white, just like the rest of the building. The clothing made a large contrast against his smooth, dark skin. His name tag read 'Franklin'.
"Yes, I am." I smiled at him while he typed something on his computer.
"Doctor Koplenson is with someone else right now, but he should be finished up soon." He spoke, still looking at the computer screen.
Doctor Koplenson is the man in charge here. He must be busy considering there's a lost patient, and he's hiring new workers.
"Thank you." I left the desk and sat in one of the chairs. Low music played in the lobby. It was slow and quiet, making the atmosphere feel creepy.
A few minutes went past. Each second that went by made me feel more and more uncomfortable. Anxiety grew in my chest the more I thought of the interview.
My thoughts were cut short when yelling came from down the hall. Two men screamed at each other, their voices covering up the sound of the music completely.
"Mr. L/N I have done all I can."
L/N? Sure enough, my father walked around the corner. Doctor Koplenson followed behind him.
This was the first time I had seen the doctor. He had dark brown hair with bright blue eyes. His eyebrows Pointe downwards, I wasn't sure if it was because he was upset or if that's just how he looks. It did make him look much more intimatidating.
"Y/N?" My father stopped for a second to look at me. "What are you doing here?"
I opened my mouth to speak, but Doctor Koplenson beat me to it. "She is here for a job interview. I am ready for you now."
"This conversation is not done, Koplenson." My father stormed out of the building. I was unsure what happened, but I bet he would tell me about it later.
Doctor Koplenson met me with a firm and professional handshake when I walked over to him.
"Hello. Come this way." I followed the doctor as he led me to his office. It was close to the lobby and in a safe place away from the patients. The office itself had a hardwood look to it. Much different than the rest of the building.
He sat behind his desk while I sat in the chair across from him. So the interview starts.
