It was the beginning months of the year 1542, at the end of winter. Ryogetsu of Naguchi and a small envoy journeyed to the Kai Province where he was bound for a meeting with a powerful Daimyo.

The town they rested in had a lively marketplace. From outside came the laughter and cheer of the citizens as they made their daily purchases.

As the sun set the sounds outside began to resemble the lively chatter of a festival rather than a marketplace.

On the third day in the town Ryogetsu left to meet with the Kai Province's daimyo. And once he had gone, Ourei and Yuuki once again heard the lively chatter from the town's inhabitants.

Three autumns had passed since Ourei had met Yuuki. As the seasons changed his face became more refined. More handsome.

Yuuki had once told Ourei about his biological mother. And if she was a famous courtesan, like he had said, then he had irrefutably inherited his looks from her.

Ourei could understand Ryogetsu's love for Yuuki's face, but she could never have imagined that a man as stubborn and obnoxious as Ryogetsu would fall in love and cherish someone as gentle, kind, and soft-spoken as Yuuki. They were an odd match, to say the least.

Ryogetsu's meeting with the Kai Province daimyo played a key part in the Naguchi clan's future success. Since Ryogetsu succeeded his father as clan head, he had made an enemy out of the Akano clan. They were on the verge of war.

Yuuki was not safe from his brothers here, and Ourei had been ordered to watch Yuuki while Ryogetsu was away.

Yuuki was staring out the window watching the townspeople as they chattered like busy little birds. His curiosity had been peaked the first day when they had arrived. Ryogetsu had a dislike for crowded places, and so Yuuki had not pestered him to see the marketplace.

Ourei eyed him. When he had first arrived, he had kept his countenance composed. One could never read Yuuki by his expressions, but he had become more comfortable. His face was quite expressive when he did not keep himself equanimous.

"Do you want to go to the market?" Yuuki's face lit up at the question. Ourei smiled. "Come. Let us go."

The marketplace was magnificent. Three streets with were lined with stalls. Each had either food or small trinkets or necessities on display. The town's livelihood depended on its market.

Couples and groups of friends and families crowded the streets. They laughed and chatted, causing a sweet cacophony of sounds. Children played silly games. The younger children ran through the crowd, narrowly avoiding getting stomped on or nearly tripping the marketgoers.

The children ran past Yuuki and Ourei. They halted in their course. "Look at his hair!" Some marketgoers laughed at the curious children. Others gave Yuuki quick glances, staring at his ruby red mane in wonder. A woman, perhaps a mother, scolded the child.
