"Hey," the way Hayate answered the phone call was soft, flirty. Makoto glanced at him, on the verge of laughter.
It was Saturday night. Hayate was sitting in the living room while Makoto cooked dinner in the kitchen. He was still nursing his hangover. 'Shut up,' he mouthed at Makoto.
"Okay, listen to me," Touma said on the line, "The rainy season's coming in like a few days, right?"
"Yeah," Hayate stretched out the word.
"And I know we're both still hungover, but I want to go up Mount Takao tomorrow to take photos. Come with me?"
"Touma," Hayate began, his voice took on a playful tone, "Are you asking me out on a date?"
"Isn't it obvious?"
Hayate laughed. He couldn't stop smiling. "All right. Where should we meet?"
"Meet me at the train station at noon."
Mount Takao was rich with vegetation in the heat of summer. When Touma was small, his family would hike up here every spring. The tradition was if you could not make it all the way up here, you would not get lunch. Now that he was an adult, he came here more often to take photos.
Touma loved taking photographs. Though he did not pursue his passion for photography professionally, he still enjoyed it in his free time.
He and Hayate hiked up Mount Takao with ease. Neither were unfit. Every time Touma saw something pretty, he would take a picture. It was like the click of the camera came every few seconds.
"How long have you had that camera?" Hayate asked.
Touma smiled as he lifted the camera to take a picture of a small statue. They were near the Buddhist temple. "My dad bought it for me when I was fifteen. After I joined the photography club in high school."
"What are your parents like?"
Touma lowered his camera, meeting Hayate's eyes. "I told you my mom's a veterinarian, right? When I was little, she would bring home wild animals from the zoo. We once had a panda living in our home for a month." Touma laughed, "It used to drive my dad crazy. He was pretty excited when I got interested in photography. Hoped I'd be artsy like him. Turns out I'm more like my mom."
"And your siblings?"
"They are twins."
Hayate's eyes widened. Twins? Just like Yuuki... Daisaku and Naozumi had been twins, hadn't they?
"You?" Touma asked.
"What about me?" Hayate asked.
Touma rolled his eyes as he lifted his camera up to his eye again. "Tell me about your family."
