The days without their father to torment them were spent in peaceful bliss.
Although the girl was beautiful, she was also uneducated, uncourteous, and rude. She could not use chopsticks. Her tongue was sharp, and she had little tolerance for things she disliked. She said whatever she thought. She ate until she felt her stomach would explode. She would fight back whenever they tried to teach her to read and write by scattering the paper all over the room and throwing ink.
Even Jinshiro, who was naturally patient, became annoyed with her.
Upon Noboru's return to his household, things changed. Seiya was punished for his disobedience.
After receiving forty lashes he was forced to kneel for hours. His punishment ended late in the night.
Jinshiro found him in his quarters. It was a small room, made only for sleeping and keeping a handful of personal belongings. "Father was too harsh," he said.
"It will heal," his voice was hoarse. The girl—who had chosen the name Ourei—stuck her head through the doorway. In the last month she had gained weight. No more bone was visible through her flesh. The bruise on her cheek and rip on her lip had healed. Her shape was starting to take a bit, too. She looked healthier than she did when they first met.
"May I help?"
"Of course," Jinshiro said, "Come."
Jinshiro was the kindest person Seiya knew. There was no man of the same station in all Japan that would apply ointment to his bodyguard, especially after a punishment ordered by his father.
It took around three hours, but the two finished applying the ointment successfully. By that time Seiya had fallen to sleep.
Ourei knelt down, staring at Seiya's face. "Do not wake him," Jinshiro said while he closed the bottle of ointment.
"Where did he get these scars?" her way of speaking had become smoother, too.
Jinshiro glanced at Seiya's face. "I am not certain. He says he got them in his childhood. He never says anything more."
Ourei spent some moments more staring at his face, then she followed Jinshiro out.
One morning Ryogetsu decided to wake Kou up especially early. The sun had not even begun to peek over the horizon, and it was still dark out. When Kou was first brought to Naguchi Castle he always trained his eyes down and spoke to Ryogetsu with the utmost respect. Now the two had already been friends for six years. He no longer treated Ryogetsu with any kind of respect.
"What the hell?" Kou asked him. His eyes kept closing and his head bobbed down. He looked like he would fall asleep at any moment, yet he was still able to swear at Ryogetsu.
Ryogetsu laughed and ran a hand through his long onyx hair. He had not gone to the trouble to tie it back this morning.
Kou peered at him with half closed eyes. "What do you want this early in the morning?"
Kou had hooded eyes and a sharp chin. His skin had not gotten much lighter since his childhood. Ryogetsu had brought him to the dojo and all the sliding doors stood open to ventilate the inside.
Ryogetsu grabbed two objects he had hidden in a corner of the dojo. He came and planted himself down beside Kou who still could not keep his eyes open long enough to be awake. Kou glanced at the things in Ryogetsu's hands. His eyes widened a little when he saw them.
