Ryogetsu of Naguchi was not himself after his return.
Ourei had such a suspicion the day Ryogetsu returned from his imprisonment at the hands of the Madou clan. He had returned in the snow, soaked in melted snowflakes. He had explained nothing to her upon his return. He had said nothing to anyone, for that matter.
Ryogetsu looked worn out and tired. He did not bother to shave, either. His facial hair grew out. It made him look far older than he was. Had he been tortured? What had happened to Yuuki? When asked these questions, he would only wave them off.
The latter question was answered when Ourei heard the news of Yuuki's sacrifice. She did not hear it from Ryogetsu.
It was only when Ryogetsu waged war that his loyal subordinates knew for sure something was wrong. In the weeks that had passed his temperament had become fragile and easily provoked. His underlings were too afraid to challenge him.
After the turn of the new year, Ryogetsu once again ordered his soldiers to prepare themselves for war.
Ourei made her way to Ryogetsu's rooms. He was staring out at his garden. He had been doing that a lot lately.
"Ryogetsu," Ourei tested. She had been forced to tread carefully around this man.
"Hmm?" he asked. He did not bother to look her way.
"What are you going to do now?" she asked, "Who are you going to war with?"
"Akano."
Her eyes widened. "Ryogetsu, you cannot go to war with them. Daisaku of Akano refuses to leave Akagi. Going to war with them on their home turf is suicide. It is impossible to attack Akagi and win. You know that."
"It is possible with Ryuu. I will prevail against them."
Ourei's heart sank. Ryogetsu would never use Ryuu for something like this. Who was this man? It was not the boy she had once loved like a brother that sat before her. "Who are you?" she murmured. He did not answer.
The war between the Naguchi and Akano clans lasted for a good six months. The war efforts were violent and resulted in great losses for both sides. Akano and Naguchi had armies of equal strength. They were a match for one another. It seemed neither would prevail at this rate.
On the final morn of the war between the two clans, Ryogetsu headed toward the fortress on his own. The sun had barely risen, and many were still asleep.
Ryogetsu summoned Ryuu. The dragon crashed into the mountainside, causing the fortress that had stood for decades to crumble.
But when he jumped into the path of the redhead all such hope extinguished.
Ryogetsu broke into a sprint.
But when he jumped into the way of the redhead all such hope was extinguished.
Daisaku of Akano raised his chin, waiting for Ryogetsu to do something.
He should have known... Daisaku's hair was far too light to be Yuuki's mane like red spider lilies*.
*Red spider lilies are a symbol of death and rebirth throughout Asia.
