Once, long ago, the existence of Wielders was common knowledge instead of a forgotten thought. It was also common knowledge at that time that each woman could only birth one worthy soul, one Wielder.

During the Sengoku period the Inoue clan's Wielder was the Lady Hisako. Not only was she a woman, but her weapon being a katana made her entire existence a contradiction. The Inoue clan elders viewed this as a great disgrace and so Lady Hisako was forced to suppress her weapon.

As Hisako grew older and more beautiful, rumours began to spread that she would bear a powerful child. Many other clan leaders wanted her to marry their sons. Hisako's husband would be Noboru of the Naguchi clan, the main clan in control of the Dewa province at that time.

The first child Hisako bore him was a son she named Jinshiro. Noboru of Naguchi did not fancy his wife. He favoured prostitutes and courtesans. He would only see her to fulfil his duty.

Jinshiro of Naguchi was not a Wielder. Noboru of Naguchi's scorn and resentment for his wife only increased as the years passed.

It was summer of the year 1521. This day Hisako gave birth to her second son. Noboru of Naguchi did not show his face at his second son's birth, either. Hisako named this second son, as she did her first son. His name would be Ryogetsu.

Ryogetsu of Naguchi barely knew his father for the first years of his life. In those years he spoke only a small number of words to the man and never once felt his warmth. Ryogetsu knew who this man was, but in his young mind his so-called father was a stranger.

The people closest to Ryogetsu were his mother and his brother. Jinshiro was six years older than Ryogetsu, but age did not weaken the bond of brothers.

1526, the year Ryogetsu turned five. A man came to Naguchi Castle. Hisako introduced him as the wise man from the mountain, Master Kuroda.

Young Ryogetsu would not approach Master Kuroda. He hid his tiny body behind his mother's long silk robes and peeked at the old man from behind her. Hisako let out a low chuckle. One could not tell whether it was a laugh of humour or a nervous laugh. Her delicate hand stroked the child's head, "Ryogetsu, stop hiding," she whispered to him, then she spoke a little louder, "Master Kuroda will not harm you."

The old man stroked his grey beard. Young Ryogetsu could not help but feel the old man's beady eyes reminded him of a spider.

Seeing her child's unwillingness to move, and glancing at her husband's impatient stature, Hisako crouched down and took his small hands into her own. "Ryogetsu, Master Kuroda only wants to see if you are like Mother." The child only became more unwilling. He turned his head away from his mother's kind gaze. Hisako could not understand why Ryogetsu did not want to get any closer to Kuroda. Since he had learned to walk, he had done things so reckless she thought her heart might stop beating. A mother's heart was never at ease. She sometimes wondered if there was anything he was afraid of. Hisako sighed, "Will you do this for Mother?"
