Once upon a midnight dreary

It started the day he developed his quirk.

It was sometime during a school day eleven years ago. Bakugo was standing up for him against two other boys. Midoriya had yet to develop his quirk, and Bakugo hadn't developed his either.

Midoriya was covering his ears as the two boys shouted insults at him, and Bakugo yelled right back at them.

"You can't talk to Izuku like that! It's not his fault he doesn't have a quirk!" Bakugo yelled.

"You're only saying that because you don't have one either, you too are just the same, huh? You're both quirkless losers!" One of the boys said back.

Midoriya could hear his heart beat in his ears. Of course he was scared when his classmates' could easily harm him if they wanted to.

He was so scared of the two in front of him he didn't notice Tsubasa (the boy with red wings) sneaking up behind him. Tsubasa grabbed his shoulders and Midoriya was startled, nearly jumping a foot off the ground.

In the split second he was in the air he heard Bakugo yell in pain and the bullies scream. Deku turned his head to Bakugo in a flash to see something spiked hovering just inches above his right shoulder.

It looked almost like a shadow? He could see through it and it shifted in the light, dancing kind of like smoke. Bakugo was grabbing his arm, and Midoriya finally noticed that his shoulder was red with blood.

Midoriya rushed to Bakugo, reaching towards his best friend, but Bakugo pulled away.

"Kacchan..?" Midoriya questioned, trying to will Bakugo towards him so that he could see what was wrong.

"D-don't touch me!" Bakugo yelled, backing away slowly.

Midoriya heard the two bullies whispering to each other;
"Was that him? Did his quirk do that?" One whispered, his eyes were wide with fear.
"I think so, that's so villainous!" The other whisper-screamed back.

Midoriya was confused. He didn't know what was going on. Did he do that? Did his quirk really do that? Was it really him who hurt Kacchan?

He turned his attention back to Bakugo. He was still yelling, "I-I don't want you anywhere near me, you stupid,"

He stuttered for a moment, trying to come up with something insulting to say,

"you stupid, D-Deku!"

Bakugo was sent to the hospital as soon as a teacher found out he was injured. His mom was called and he didn't come to school for a whole month. In that time Midoriya felt the worst he had in his entire four year life span. The other kids were all too scared to go near him, so at least he wasn't being bullied.

When Bakugo came back, his shoulder had a huge scar where Izuku's quirk had hit him. Apparently he had needed stitches, and that's why he hadn't been at school.

Things were different when Bakugo came back. He never called Midoriya by name anymore. He referred to him solely as Deku. Along with that, Bakugo rallied their other classmates against him.

If someone wasn't bullying him, they completely ignored Midoriya, or just stood and watched him be beaten up by Bakugo.

It was miserable. HE was miserable. A four year old shouldn't have to deal with this. But Izuku didn't fight back, he understood his quirk was powerful, he could be a great hero with it.

What he didn't understand was why people would want to be a hero. Putting your life on the line for others was something that never clicked in Midoriya's head.
