This is a bit of a filler chapter till the end, it more so gives me a chance to.. I suppose one would say getting back into practice? I haven't written a long term story since Witchaven and I'm a little rusty. Nevertheless, enjoy!
Izuku was in advanced placement class. He has been since the fourth grade. It was probably his favorite class, it actually entertained him, unlike subjects like math or history.
There were two advanced placement classes, and Izuku was lucky enough to get the one Kacchan wasn't in. Lost in thought, Izuku stared at the teacher as she spoke about their newest project.
He spaced back in, realizing he hadn't been paying attention.
"You'll have a week to gather as much information that you can on a topic you don't know much about, but are interested in," the teacher explained, tapping the board with her knuckles, "you'll be allowed to partner with anyone in the class, or work alone if you prefer. No groups of three or more."
"We'll present these projects Monday, so don't procrastinate, I guarantee it will not be fun playing 'Catch up'"
'A topic I don't know much on? Hm, how unfortunate'
Whenever Izuku was interested in something, which wasn't often, he hyper fixated on it till he knew practically everything about it. It's what he pretended to do with heroes his whole life. He'd really have to strain his brain to think of something.
The rest of class was spent with people partnering up, Izuku obviously didn't get that option as the school punching bag, and brainstorming an idea for the project.
'Should I do space? I don't know a lot about that, I'm not particularly interested, but it's certainly something?' Izuku pondered as class went on.
He listened to the ideas of others, a boy and a girl were doing space together, a few boys were doing American Football. A girl was telling her friend she was going to do her project on some poet's life— he caught snippets of the name Edger. And yet, five minutes before he knew the bell would ring, and he had nothing.
"Struggling, are we Midoriya?" He heard his teacher ask.
"Yeah, I can't think of any topic I don't already know a lot about," he responded, tapping his pencil on the side of the desk.
"Really? Not a single one? You may be top of your class, but surely no one knows everything about everything!" His teacher responded, a playful tone in her voice— like a parent joking with their child.
"You could look at some examples from previous classes, I put some paper copies on the board earlier,"
"I've already looked, and although I'm sure an extensive look at the background of horses in the Americas might be interesting to some, it's nothing I'm interested in,"
"Perhaps something more challenging would help? Have you ever heard of Shrödinger's Cat?"
"I don't think so,"
"Well, if we were to put a cat, and a nuclear reactor that has a 50% chance out going off in the same box, and then left it completely alone, the cat and reactor act out both possible outcomes," the teacher explained, "the cat is simultaneously dead and alive and the outcome we experience, if the cat lives or dies, is only decided when we open the box."
Izuku's eyes widened. Though the idea in itself didn't seem too plausible, a house can burn down with no one around easily, the theory did interest him.
"T-thank you miss! You've just given me an idea," he exclaimed, and immediately began to search more on the topic.
He had found a topic, the existence of multiple different timelines with different branching events, all happening at once until we lay our senses on one. He started at Shrödingers Cat, and eventually found out about String Theory.
The project went well, all things considered. He got a good enough grade for his own standards. Nevertheless, he enjoyed studying String Theory in particular- and would rattle off about it to anyone who would listen, which wasn't very many.
"Imagine you made a choice- well it's theorized that an entirely different world is created the moment you made the choice, and in this alternative universe, you made a different choice," the boy chatted animatedly to his mother, of whom was nodding along with little understanding.
"I'm glad you're happy Izu-baby!" Inko responded with a bright smile on her face, "You're usually so closed off."
The two Midoriyas enjoyed each other's company for a spell, and eventually found themselves back in their habit of awkward silence, only broken when Inko spoke to Izuku in the morning or when he got home from school.
The Midoriya household was a loving one, Inko made sure, but Izuku had always been different, he was quieter than other kids, and not as obsessed with heroes as the other kids were. Then the day he developed his quirk...
The school had called her that day, she was in the middle of work, and was thankfully by her work phone.
"Ms. Midoriya, your son's quirk developed," she heard his male teacher say. There was something in his voice that gave Inko a very... odd feeling, one of foreboding.
"That's great! Although I don't see why'd you call for that, the school day is almost over I'll be picking him up soon," Inko responded, holding the receiver to her ear with her shoulder as she checked the clock and started putting her things in her bag.
"Well, Izuku's quirk is.. destructive, and it manifested of Katsuki,"
Inko paused. Did Izuku hurt Katsuki?
In the silence, she heard the distinctive sound of sirens in the background.
"We've already informed his mother, but we need to inform you as well," the teacher continued.
"Alright... my baby didn't hurt Katsuki, did he?" Inko questioned, worry growing in her stomach.
The teacher paused, and she heard shuffling on the other end. The sirens were louder, and Inko could barely hear the teacher breathing on the other end of the phone.
Then those dreaded words came...
Words Inko knew were coming the moment she heard the sirens...
"Yes. Izuku hurt Katsuki,"
Izuku was distant after that, he hardly spoke or ate the entire week after injuring Katsuki, no matter how much Inko tried to get him to. He was getting quiet like that again, and he spent hours locked in his room and only came out for dinner or to use the restroom. It made Inko worry, the sudden behavior change, him not talking, she was worried he was hurting himself.
But, he wouldn't do that, he was always so happy, even if his eyes were colder than the other kids, and he was quiet.
But... wasn't it always the happiest ones?

Writing this took way longer than planned. Oh well, at least it's out.
