Felix let out a small groan of pain as he woke up, his head pounding. The sheets underneath him seemed nice enough, but the pillow was soft, which to Felix meant he was not in his bed with his aggressively hard pillows. The young psychic kept his eyes shut, frowning, hoping he could hear someone, thoughts or just movement to let him know if he was truly awake.
Slowly, Felix opened his eyes. The room he found himself in was dark, with the only light coming in from small windows at the top of the walls. He was in the basement because, of course, he was. It was just his luck.
"Wow, you take a long time to wake up," a man's voice said, with an accent Felix couldn't quite place but sounded Eastern European. The man blended into the darkness around them, and the first thing Felix noticed were the scars that covered the young man, among ones that looked like knife wounds where several bite marks. To make matters more concerning to the psychic, this man didn't seem to have any thoughts, at least none Felix could hear.
"Who are you?" Felix asked slowly, watching as the man moved closer to him, head tilted like a cat about to play with its food. Everything about this man screamed predator, and the way he walked was fluid and reminded Felix of a dancer.
"My name's Sebastian. It's lovely to meet you, Felix Rhodes," Sebastian said, grinning widely and showing two sharp fangs that glinted off the light from the windows. Felix flinched back.
"You're a vampire?" Felix questioned, his heart rate picking up slightly as he tried to figure out what to do, how to get out of this situation with this man watching him like a mouse.
"Nope." What? "Aren't you supposed to be psychic? Shouldn't you know what I am right off the bat?" Sebastian looked almost disappointed before plopping himself on Felix's bed, seemingly not noticing the frantic scramble away Felix did at the action.
"I can't see anything about you," Felix said after a moment, "I guess you can't be a vampire with that many scars unless you got them before you died?"
"Nah, they would have healed if I turned. Vampire magic likes making people pretty. Anyways, I'm human, kind of," Sebastian said, pausing for a moment before sticking out his hand, "Your ancestors used to be able to see stuff when they touched me, so if you want to see for yourself, go ahead."
Felix stared at the man in front of him. Curiosity lighted up Sebastian's green eyes with some strange interest, and he was watching Felix with a mixture of that and excitement. Felix was glad that the man (although he didn't look more than a year older than Felix) was so open with his emotions. It made the lack of Felix's powers a little more comforting.
Sebastian's grin widened as Felix reached out a clasped his hand with the other boys, wincing as darkness overtook his vision.
"Mama!" A young voice screamed, "Mama, Please!" A small boy dressed in early 13th-century clothing was pushing against two men in dark clothes. His green eyes were bright with tears as he reached out to a dark-haired woman watching from the other side of a gate. "Mama!" he screamed, voice breaking before turning and biting down on one of the man's arms, using his shout to escape their arms and run towards his mother.
The mom had tears in her eyes as she crouched down and hugged her son, who was sobbing uncontrollably, "Mama, please! Haven't I been a good boy? I don't want to go. I need to protect you," he cried, tiny hands clutching his mother's clothes tightly. However, she didn't move to take him away from this place and the dark building that stood before them.
"You will be protecting me and everyone else. You must go with them," she whispered into her son's hair, "The unclean dead are everywhere, little one, and the Tsar, we need strong little ones like you to be blessed by our lord," she said, her voice shaking.
