4 Christmases from the past
He had left three weeks ago with the cliche excuse that he was going out to the grocery store, whenever Felix looked back on that he wishes he had noticed how strange he had been acting, he wishes he had thought of his dreams like the visions they were, but he was just a kid who had nightmares.
His mother was frantic, the holiday season was approaching and he knew how hard she was working to make things okay, to make things better, but Caroline's dad had left recently as well, so the two children had come up with a plan to make their moms feel better.
"Just you wait, Care, this is going to be great!" Felix shouted as the small seven year old dragged a pathetic looking tree behind him, his best friend dragging a box of lights and ornaments alongside of him. It was quite cold in Mystic Falls this year, and they had actually gotten a fairly decent amount of snow. "We'll be home at any moment, we just gotta drag these to the sled!" he grinned, the small red sled sitting down the block where they had parked it on their way to buy a Christmas tree.
"Yeah, I know, Felix. Mom and Ms. Rhodes are gonna love it! It'll be the best looking tree in all of Mystic Falls, maybe even in all of Virginia!" She grinned, her nose red from the cold, and her hat falling over her eyes slightly. Felix laughed, his own hands hurting slightly from the cold and from gripping the bark of their small little tree. When he would look down at them later he would notice the cuts covering his small hands, but they would have a tree and it would be worth it.
"Alrighty, here we go!" he grinned, pushing the tree onto the sled, and tying it down with an old jump rope he had found, then place their box on the edge, "Do you think your mom's gonna notice some of the lights missing?" he asked, looking in the box at their stolen artifacts.
"Nah, she hasn't even started decorating yet, she's pretty busy with work right now. She's the Sheriff now or something," Caroline shrugged, "Daddy usually decorated the house, but he's on holiday or something."
Felix nodded, "I think my Daddy's own vacation too, did they go somewhere together?" he asked, the two children beginning to haul the tree and decorations through the small town, and the good 15-minute walk to Felix's house, a path they had been walking since they were little, however, they usually had their parents with them, or their parents at least knew where they were, but oh well, it's not like there were monsters in the woods or anything.
However it was already getting late, and as is the way of winter, the sun was already beginning to set and before either of the children knew it, they were lost.
"Felix, how much longer?" Caroline asked, looking towards Felix who usually wore an old watch his father had given him, the small boy looked down at his wrist doing his best to decipher what clock actually read.
"I think we're really close now?" he guessed, the pair had been walking a little slower than usual since they were hauling a tree behind them, and both were fairly cold as the time continued on. "We should be home soon," he muttered, squinting his eyes slightly in an attempt to see his house in the distance, part of him regretting not asking one of the adults they knew in town give them a ride, but he was fairly positive him and Caroline were capable enough to finish the journey. They both knew they were lost, had known for a bit now, but both of the small kids were in denial.
"Are you children, okay?" A young female voice suddenly spoke, the two kids jumping out of their skins as they whirled around to find a young woman approaching them from one of the other roads, a large husky trotting happily next to her. Felix didn't recognize her, he realized, stepping slightly in front of Caroline, the two of them grabbing each other's hands in the presence of a stranger. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you, I live down that road over there," she said pointing down one of the roads that led to a small neighbourhood. The dog was wagging its tail at them, and it helped to make Felix feel slightly better. Despite the slightly off-putting feeling he felt when she appeared, he felt as though they could trust this woman, dogs were usually good judges of character.
