Cross sat atop his Gaster Blaster once more. He did so silently, eyes shut as he attempted to remain at ease. Today they'd all be risking their lives. Today they'd take back their home, or die trying. Today his skills as a guard would be put to the ultimate test. He exhaled, managing to keep his emotions under wraps.
He wanted to be able to completely focus without his anxiety getting in the way. When the time came for Nightmare to take back his full form, he'd allow the negativity to return for his sake. For now, he'd remain calculated.
"Cross!" Nightmare suddenly called from the forest below. He glanced down, finding the king staring back up at him with the roundest pinpricks. He had to remind himself that Nightmare hated the concept of being seen as cute. What a shame. It suits him more than he realizes. "Can I come up? I'm letting that murder trio of ours figure themselves out. Keeping them all in line is starting to drive me crazy," He explained.
Cross huffed with amusement. Murder trio. Seeing as Nightmare's presence completely sucked any negative thoughts from his mind, he had to pick him up himself. He balanced himself carefully as he moved his blaster close to the forest floor. There he held out his hand to Nightmare. He took it gently, letting Cross help him up.
Cross couldn't help but be filled with admiration as the smaller skeleton placed himself right in front of him. He held onto his arms as Cross lifted them both back into the sky. Once they were high enough to essentially have privacy, he stopped and Nightmare slowly let go.
"Are you ready for our mission?" Nightmare asked.
"I don't think It'd be very truthful for me to say yes, but I definitely prefer it over hanging out in the woods for the rest of time," He answered, reaching forward to readjust the slight tilt of Nightmare's tiara. The king gave him a slight smile, which had Cross filling up with warmth as per usual. "You're so-" Don't say it. Don't call him cute. However, Nightmare was already tilting his head and waiting for him to finish the sentence. "-Endearing," He chose to say instead.
Cross watched as Nightmare appeared to stutter, eye lights flickering off for a second before he glanced off to the side with a purple hue across his face. "I'm supposed to be a horrifying god," He whispered, his hands balling up. "You're supposed to be afraid of me, but I haven't felt that from you in a long time."
Crss thought for a long moment, then let out a small sigh. "Nightmare, there was something I wanted to tell you back in the Garden, before all this happened," He admitted, slowly reaching a hand forward to place it overtop one of Nightmare's. He flinched in slight surprise. "I feel- For a while now I- I've felt-" He struggled to find the right words. He fought to maintain his confidence because of it. "I think I've fallen for-" Once again he didn't finish.
"I know," Nightmare breathed out, almost like it was a relief to say. Cross blinked at him in surprise. "Honestly, I've known for a while now. I've known since before the Garden. I've sensed it- Not in the traditional sense, since it isn't a negative energy... But I still have witnessed numerous moments where you'd look at me, and suddenly... Suddenly you were void of all negativity," He explained, apparently struggling to maintain eye contact. He stared at their hands instead. "There was only one emotion I could think of that had the power to be so pure. And that was love. You'd look at me, and you felt love. You still do."
Cross softened his gaze. "And I've seen the way you've looked at me these past couple of days as well," He noted in turn. "Nightmare... What do you truly feel around me?" He asked. "Do you..." He trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.
Nightmare lifted the hand Cross had placed upon him and moved it up to his own cheekbone. Cross found himself caressing it on pure instinct while Nightmare leaned into his touch. The unbearably soft look in Nightmare's eyes said it all. Cross gave a gentle chuckle, more warmth overwhelming his soul. "Let's take back your kingdom of the night, my lord- My love," He whispered.
