"We're too late," Ink whispered. He walked lightly, minding his step as he scanned the anti-void. The remnants of a universe's code still drifted down from the endless sky above, joining the scattered mess which surrounded the skeletons. "We couldn't save this world, but Fatal Error shouldn't be far," Ink told them, kneeling down so he could pick up one of the torn fragments of code. He began to read the zeros and ones as if it were actual text. Cross didn't bother trying to do the same thing. He already knew he'd have no idea what any of the numbers meant.
"Wonderful," Error sarcastically grumbled, carelessly stepping on the very paper Ink had been so mindful of. "When we find him, we'll still be down two gods," He then complained, folding his arms before lightly kicking aside another piece of tattered code.
"I searched the entire castle myself. Reaper was nowhere to be found," Cross calmly told him. He shifted his pinpricks to fall on Nightmare next. "Fell couldn't join us either. His soul hasn't fully recovered. He'd be an easy target," He added, though the king didn't seem too concerned with his absence. The trio was still with them, ready to follow any order given by Nightmare. "Fell did leave me with a word of advice. Fatal apparently has terrible vision," He was sure to announce.
They all paused upon hearing a whistle sound from an island nearby. The group looked up, finding Paperjam waving down at them from its cliffside. "I found Fatal. He's just on the horizon," They called down to the team, pointing back towards the opposite end of the floating island. "Come take a look," They then said, retreating from the rocky ledge. When they disappeared from view, the others all teleported to follow after them. Paperjam had crouched down on the opposing ledge, safely tucked behind a cluster of stones. Cross joined their side first, scanning the distance.
"There," He said upon seeing the vibrant red of Fatal's socket and bloody slash stand out against the stark white of the anti-void. Even if he hadn't noticed the figure, the red strings above would have revealed his location anyways. Fatal looked to be pacing, like a predator behind bars. "I believe he's waiting for something," Cross noted, glancing back towards the rest of the group.
"It's most likely us he's waiting for," Nightmare replied as he stepped forward, his body blending into the stones shadows. His tendrils and eye remained completely visible while the rest of him seemed to evaporate into the darkening shade. "He's aware we'd sense a world's destruction. He wants this fight," He hissed, tendrils twitching.
"Do we wait until it's on our terms then?" Killer asked as the trio all came to peer over the stones alongside Cross. They studied the pacing mad-man for themselves. "We could hold off until we have the element of surprise," Killer suggested, but it was Ink who quickly objected.
"No, we can't let his destruction continue any longer. We're going to have to give Fatal what he wants and face him here and now," Ink told them. He whispered jumbled thoughts to himself for a moment before he pointed to Nightmare. "We may not be able to maintain the element of surprise for everyone, but he's probably going to be a whole lot more excited to see us gods than the mortals," He said before he studied the horizon once more. He gestured towards what looked like a hovering stone tower, blurred by the anti-void's white haze. "While we have his focus, they can circle around to that tower, where they can wait until the perfect opportunity to strike presents itself," He suggested.
Nightmare hummed. "Very well," He agreed. He nodded to the trio, though Cross assumed he meant to lump him in with them as well. "Follow Ink's advice. Get to that tower while we engage, and whatever you do, do not be seen," Nightmare ordered. The three gave him a respectful nod of understanding, though Cross just narrowed his sockets. He waited until Nightmare noticed his reluctant stare, then further furrowed the bone along his brow. "You're not going to cooperate, are you?" Nightmare soon realized.
