The bar is packed tonight. Way too crowded.
I'm sitting on a barstool, Sawyer and Declan sitting on the ones adjacent to me. Kofi's either going crazy on the dance floor or flirting with a girl somewhere. I'm too squished to even turn my head to look for him.
The good thing is that we are all pretty intoxicated, at least enough to not get the fuck out of here considering how thick the air feels.
Sawyer has a drink in hand, presumably some brooding drink like whiskey or scotch or bourbon. Which I'm pretty sure are all just different types of the same alcohol. Declan also has a pint of beer in his hand-- not surprising. Sophie stands in front of him, the two seemingly in conversation, Sawyer nodding his head occasionally to reassure them that he's still listening.
Being around Declan and Sophie, together, has been interesting. I've only exchanged pleasantries with her in the past, but it seems like she's really warmed up to the girls. Which doesn't surprise me. They're a genuinely good group of girls who have managed to strike a healthy balance between fun and work. Most friend groups I've met here have not achieved that by any means. I figured she'd like Blanca, probably because Sophie's reserved and seems like the type of girl who needs a different type of quiet instead of an opposite.
Some introverted people find peace in extroverted companions. In a way, Sawyer was like that with me. While I wasn't really the "life of the party" or anything, I had no problems getting out there and being friends with people. Frankly, I had many acquaintances at school, and not to toot my own horn or anything, thrived in a big group. Awkwardness or shyness were just never things I consistently experienced, and I was very thankful for that. But Sophie seemed reserved, not exactly shy, and I just had a feeling her and Blanca would get along, once one of them decided to give up their tough persona exterior. It seems Sophie's doing a better job at that, a wide smile plastered on her face as she laughs at something Declan says, Sawyer smirking next to him.
People-watching was fun, especially when slightly drunk. I hadn't really made a dent in my gin and tonic, which was okay with me. I didn't like getting wasted and always tried to maintain a semblance of control, even when I drank or smoked past my limit.
"Hi."
My head turns to the voice in front of me. I take a sip of my drink upon seeing who it is.
Josie stands there, face flushed because of the alcohol and sweaty atmosphere, not because of my shameless flirting.
I don't respond for a little, taking my time to really admire her in this environment. After seeing years worth of Josie in stressful, academic, and professional places, I determine that this version of her is my favorite. Not the party animal one or anything, but the genuinely happy version.
Her face glistens with a thin layer of sweat, probably from dancing with Serena and Cal.
I may have taken some time to watch her dance. Don't blame me. I mean, she's clearly no novice. She looks like fucking sex personified anytime she moves. Maybe that's just because it's her.
