Amon and I awoke slowly together, soft elation fading with each heartbeat. I exhaled in disbelief at what had transpired, my heart was vibrating with exhilaration and wonder. Amon's eyes opened slowly and we leaned in to kiss deeply. He wrapped himself around me and we curled our naked bodies into each other.

"I can't lose you," he whispered. "You're everything to me."

"I'll always be here with you," I whispered back. "I love you so much." We knew that our euphoria could not last forever and we were forced to attend a final meeting before our battle was initiated. He helped me dress and I reciprocated the favor, drawing out the intimate moment as long as I could.

We exited the room with a professional air and made our way to the meeting room. Gashtar and his accomplices stood around a metal table, silent and stoic with concentration.

"We've gathered our troops," Gashtar said. "They're waiting outside our base. We'll follow the strategy you've outlined in our last meeting ("meeting"), Akira and execute them immediately as planned. I've appointed sub-commanders who will oversee our different divisions: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Division 1 will consist of 45 men, Division 2: 55, Division 3: 60, Division 4: 100, Division 5: 100. Division 1 will attack base F first, drawing them out and attempting to infiltrate it. Following that Division 3 will attack as the enemy becomes vulnerable trying when to counter division 1."

"I've done research and have gotten information from direct sources that claim that base F has around 150 men, which will give them a number advantage but our strategy will hopefully compensate for this," the Division 1 commander said.

"What role do Akira, myself and you play?" Amon asked Gashtar

."Akira has agreed to command Division 3 as she is familiar with firearms and utilizing kagune," Gashtar replied. "You will be acting as my bodyguard as I command division 5." Amon's eyes widened.

"Does that mean you're going into direct combat..?" he directed at me.

"Don't worry about me," I insisted. "I've engaged in many raids on ghoul territory and bases, this won't be any different."

"Gang members must have more training and preparations than smaller, arbitrary ghoul organizations," he pressed. "Are you sure you want to do this? I can go as your replacement, I'm a senior ghoul after all and therefore have stronger fighting capabilities...""

That's exactly why you're coming with me," Gashtar cut in. "I need a strong bodyguard." His stare intensified. "Don't you remember our agreement?" Amon looked at the ground in quiet remorse before looking back up.

"I'll do as you say," he finally said. He looked at me with deep concern. "Be careful out there, Akira." I nodded.

"I will, I promise."

Our troops organized themselves into their corresponding divisions after preparations were carried out. Each of us were equipped with a gun capable of damaging ghouls, although since this was a primitive gang we lacked armor. Amon and I were given our appropriate quinques. While no one was looking he traced his fingers along my cheek, descending to my jawline and rubbing the back of my neck.

"Please be careful," he begged. "I love you so much."

"Likewise," I whispered. "I'll meet you at the end of it."

We embraced and kissed quickly before separating into our correct divisions. Base F was 15 miles from our location which meant we would take groups of trucks - most of them previously stolen - and approach the base, the group dispersing in different directions and following separate routes. We had left at evening making so that by the time we arrived it would be early night. The car I drove was decent, although its obtainment had questionable ethics. The sky was dimming and I took a back road to conceal my approach and make my presence as inconspicuous as possible. We were still in a ghetto district, although not in the same town. The area of poverty expanded to encompass a very large area including the proximity in which we were arriving. The silhouettes of trees and impoverished buildings were ominous with the vacancy of life. I failed to see anyone walking or lights in houses - but then again it was getting dark and it was treacherous to walk when the presence of gangs lingered.

Suddenly a creature smashed into my windshield, I gasped in shock, immediately pressing the brakes and skidding out of the car with my quinque in hand. It was a ghoul - how the fuck did it land on my car? I faced the enemy ghoul, its eyes were that hideous black, an iridescent kagune extending from its back in two branches. It rounded on me impulsively, elongating its kagune and attempting to seize or crush me with it. I activated my spine quinque and blocked its attack with my left hand, spinning towards its vulnerable side as it was preoccupied with my attack and shooting it in the face with the gun in my right hand. The ghoul wasn't even able to cry out before it collapsed to its knees, keeling over. Its head was split open by the bullet and the contents of its skull were spilled across the dirt ground.

Was that the only one? I was gasping for breath, not out of exertion but out of shock, it was so sudden and scary. Now I had a crack on my windshield, nice. Quickly I stepped into the car, the key still turned in the slot - but the engine failed to start. A cold terror began to coalesce in my stomach. I was unfamiliar with this area and with the impending darkness I was vulnerable on all sides. I continued onward, my steps quickened with panic, heart pounding with suppressed fear. I was by myself, Jesus that was a terrible idea, maybe I deserved to die for being an idiot and deviating from the group.

Unexpectedly another ghoul lunged at me from the side, its kagune glowing in the sinister darkness. I entered a fighting stance and prepared to engage it, circling it with anticipation. It jumped at me again, its kagune outstretched. Why did this ghoul think these blatant attacks would be effective, was it this inexperienced? I blocked another swing and moved backwards in steady paces, positioning myself into an angle with the advantage of clear peripheral vision. I moved back again as it flung itself at me yet another time. Suddenly my vision was cut off and I was paralyzed in the powerful grip of someone else. I struggled violently, but the restraint was unable to be shaken. The ghoul I had originally been fighting approached me now as I stood powerless.

"Why does this ghoul have a kagune in a suitcase?" it asked with surprised curiosity. The one who had immobilized me answered. My fear intensified into a hammering coldness.

"That's a quinque - this is a Counter Ghoul investigator."
