Amon looked at me with expectancy and urgency. What were we to do? They were ghouls, so would they kill us if we confessed being human? Did they know anything about the CCG?
"Yes, we're ghouls," I finally said. The leader assessed us quickly.
"Show me your kagunes."
"We're a special type of ghoul," I lied. "Our kagunes are portable."
The leader looked at his subordinates that were standing nearby.
"Then where are they?"
"It's in the apartment where you kidnapped us."
I was suddenly hopeful that my ploy would successfully exploit his ignorance. The leader nodded to one of his goons and they exited the room, only to quickly return with our luggage and quinque cases. "Is this them?" he reached into the bag and grabbed my bag of tampons.
"Jesus Christ, do you even know what a girl is?"
He kicked me in the gut hard again.
"You're such a fucking smart ass, shut the fuck up," he snarled. He turned to Amon. "Can someone who's not a complete pain in the ass explain your kagunes to me?"
"You need to remove our restraints first," Amon said fiercely.
"I'm not untying the bitch, she's annoying."
Reluctantly he clipped Amon's restraints with his knife and allowed him space to approach our quinques. He picked up his and activated it seamlessly, the weapon warping into its natural state of two bars with a blunt blade at the end. "Here it is," he said. "Satisfied?"
"Interesting. Never heard of portable kagunes, the more you know." He straightened himself up. "Anyways, I'm Gashtar, I'm a leader in this gang and I saw you kill a ghoul with speed and talent. We need ghouls like you to fight on our side."
"Your side?"
"There's a war between the Merdetaros and the Helixias, they're trying to encroach on our turf and steal our drugs, they have been intervening with our drug trade and obstructing us from making as much bank as we could. We need to wipe them out."
"And if we don't?" Amon inquired. Gashtar smirked at him.
"We kill you."
Amon went quiet and a disdainful expression crossed his face. He turned back to look at me, I grimaced at him but nodded.
"Okay," he agreed. "We'll fight for you." Gashtar smirked harder at us.
"But first," he stated. "You need to go through the initiation process." Amon cringed.
"And what does that mean?"
"You have to fight fellow applicants to our gang to the death in the arena."
He glared at us with amusement. "You better take your portable kagunes, you're going to need them." He refused to elaborate any further - perhaps the enigmatic nature of this test made it more amusing?
I was still tied up as Amon and I waited in a stark room, left only with our quinque cases. The walls were made of tattered concrete, the ceiling illuminated only by dim bulbs.
"This is ideal," I said matter of factly. "We infiltrate this gang from the inside, find out where Rasdar is and then eliminate him."
"What about the arena?" he said with uncertainty.
"You're a senior investigator," I laughed. "You should be fine."
"And you?" he asked. "I don't want you to get hurt. I really care about you."
I smiled hard."Don't worry about me," I assured him. "We'll find a way. When you face the enemy you fight even if you lose your arms and legs." Amon smiled back and nodded to me. Gashtar soon entered the room.
"Bitch," he directed at me. "You're first."
"It's Akira."
"You're still a fucking bitch."
"Touche."He lead me through a complex maze of hallways, as we approached the arena I could hear the shrill roaring laughter and hollering of ghouls. Gashtar opened a rusted doorway and threw me into the pit, tossing my quinque after me. Before me stood a 10ft tall ghoul, brandishing an impressive, glowing kagune that broke into 4 branches with blades at the end. Oh god.Gashtar cackled then shut the door after me. My hands were still tied behind my back.
