Amon and I woke slowly among the others, many of whom had deserted the area. Amon pulled me closer to him with his arm and we laid on the grass staring at the sky and our industrial surroundings.
"What is the first thing you want to do when we get home?" he asked.
"I'm not sure, you?"
"I want to write, maybe about our life and all of our experiences. I'm not very good at writing, but I still want to do it. I want to document all these wonderful moments together that I don't want to forget," he said. I thought about that.
"Sounds like a very good idea," I agreed. "I'd love to read it. What would you call it?"
"The Lovely Splendor," he answered.
"That's a very poetic name." We laid on the grass a little longer, feeling the soft pull of summer wind and hearing the birds flutter and sing. I missed Tokyo to be honest, but it was nice to be somewhere new, this was like an adventure. Well, it actually was an adventure.
"Now what?" I asked.
"Gashtar hesitated to capture base F and has decided to go straight to base T. He retreated his troops until who knows when. We still need to follow through with our plan and intercept the ransom collector. I'm not sure how," he said.
"How did he react to you leaving?"
"He wants me dead, ha," he chuckled.
"Nice, so we're fucked?" His face became serious with concentration.
"No, I don't think so. You don't have a quinque though, that's troublesome. I still have mine." I hadn't thought about that, how was I to infiltrate the base without a quinque or in fact any kind of weapon?
We finally got up and Amon took me to eat breakfast at a small coffee shop called 're', which stood for Retarded Epileptics, pretty sure whoever named it was high on crack. It was a nice cafe though, I hadn't eaten something this nice in a while. Amon and I continued talking, this time just casual conversation. To our surprise we were suddenly approached by Marcus in our outside eating area.
"Akira told me about your mission to assassinate Rasdar at one point," he commented. "And your only impediment is the lack of weapons and resources. I think I can help you with that." Marcus brought us back behind a secluded building, but it was puzzling that he said he could help us when there was nothing here. Then suddenly he activated his kagune.
Unnerved Amon and I stepped back and were about to flee. I thought he was on our side! My trust and faith in humanity was shattered and I felt devastated. He stepped forward and approached us, his eyes that ugly black and irises red. His kagune was 4 branches of glowing arms that had simple blades at the tips. I actually fell to my knees I was so devastated.
"I trusted you," was all I could whisper, completely shocked. He stepped in front of me and looked down with seeming menace.
"Kill me," he said.
I fell backwards on my hands. What? Did I hear him correctly?
"Please kill me and take my kagune," he said desperately. "I have nothing to live for, I have no friends or anything to call my own, I have no family - my son has no idea where I am and the last time we talked was 5 years ago. Do you know how long that is? There's no way I could ever contact him, please put me out of my misery. Take my kagune and use it to help others like I am incapable to do." I was still in complete shock.
"You helped me," I said. "You gave me company and connection when I needed it most. You do help others." He closed his eyes and turned away.
"All relationships are ephemeral and there's nothing I can do about that, and in fact it's better that way. Please, please kill me," he begged.
"I can't do that, I can't kill you."
"Please, please do this one last favor for me." I looked at Amon for help and he too seemed as shocked and baffled as me.
"I can't, I can't," I kept saying, shaking my head and trembling. He looked down at me with an expression of brokenness and sadness, yet compassionate at the same time. Then suddenly he jerked one of his kagune arms forward and buried it in his throat.
