A chill ran down her bare spine when cool air met the damp skin of her back. She was lying flat on her belly, one hand draped across the smooth plane of her husband's abdomen and the other curled beneath her. She was comfortably sated after a lengthy evening of making love to the man she intended on being with forever. The concept was still so foreign. Being a wife wasn't the only thing baffling her but the notion of being committed to a single person until she took her last breath was almost pure insanity. Meredith Grey ten years ago would have scoffed at the prospect of marriage. She never pictured herself in a stable, loving relationship. Not till that first encounter at Joe's bar. Since then nothing in her life had made a lick of sense. She expected the world to keep surprising her.
Derek grinned lazily just to showcase a glimpse of his pearly teeth. She adored his smile. His eyes were sparklers when he grinned. Happiness was his best look, it always had been. Not to mention those dimples. She'd spent countless nights kissing the indentions of his cheeks. Red shined just shy of Derek's shoulder. The time was a bit alarming. Their clock revealed the unforgettable hour of three in the morning. Usually she would be asleep by now or at least trying to if her insomnia wasn't coming to rear its ugly head. Tonight she doesn't let the time bother her because she had not a single obligation come daylight except lying in bed with her husband.
"I love you," Derek's tone like crushed velvet. He brought the hand idly stroking his belly up to his lips and he kissed her long slender fingers individually.
"Hmm," Meredith hummed in response. "Likewise,"
"Well I'd sure hope so," he teased her gently and he motioned for her to come curl up in his arms. She obliged without question, using his chest as a pillow and the rest of his body as her own personal furnace of heat. She didn't admit it out loud often but she loved to be held. Being in someone's arms safe and protected from the cruel wrath of reality was always a given. Being in Derek's arms especially.
For a while he stroked her hair, brushing the bangs from her damp forehead. They shared tender kisses every so often. Feet tangled together just beneath the rumpled bedspread. "What do you want to do tomorrow?" He questioned suddenly.
"This," her response came without hesitation.
He snorted. "Laying in bed naked?"
"Hmm, yes. We could have sex too,"
He laughed at her antics. "What about bathroom breaks? Food? Did you take personal health into account?" He asked her jokingly.
She nodded. "Of course you'll have to feed me, don't be stupid. I need sustenance to keep up my stamina."
"Of course my little bottomless pit," that comment got him a chastising slap to his hip but it was playfully so. "Okay! I like that you have a well rounded appetite. In fact I like cooking for you, Mer."
He made dinner for her that night. By some stroke of luck their roommates were all working which was rare. With the amount of strays roaming the halls it was seldom they got a chance to be alone and eat dinner together as an actual couple. Derek didn't say it but Meredith could sense there were moments he wished this home was theirs to share alone. She figured his plans to build them a house on the land in Bainbridge was the motivation that kept him from making a comment. That, and he better than anyone knew these people weren't just co-workers, they were her family. She walked through the door and the smell of lasagna flooded the home. He'd done the corny romantic dinner thing. The table was set with fine china, two cream candles lit, and a bottle of her favorite wine as the centerpiece.
"What's all this for?" She'd asked him before slipping her arms around his waist from behind. He'd been working on a salad.
"Can I not make my beautiful wife dinner?" His tone was humorous.
