Meredith was in the living room, the soft glow of a lamp casting a warm light as she flipped through a medical journal. The house was quiet, the kids finally asleep after a long day of school and activities. She glanced at the clock, wondering when Derek would be home. He had gone out with Mark, Owen, Ben, and Alex for a guys' night, a rare but much-needed break for him.A knock at the door broke the silence. Meredith stood up and opened the door, only to find Owen holding up a drunk Derek. Meredith chuckled as this was a very rare sight of her husband.
"Hey Grey, came to drop off your husband" Owen walked in and placing Derek on the couch.
"Owen! did you guys drink out the whole bar?" Meredith asked amused.
"You should see Mark and Alex, Derek is better" Owen laughed
"Hunt, I have the hottest wife ever, do you know that!" Derek suddenly stood up and wrapped his arms around Meredith.
"Derek.." Meredith blushed
"Yeah Shepherd, you've told me for the 100th time" Owen laughed as he walked out the door. "Bye Grey and goodluck with tomorrow morning Shep"
"Thank you Owen"
"I'm perfectly fine, Hunt. Thank you" Derek responded. Owen left the house to go drop off Mark.
"Let's get you to bed" Meredith put her arms around Derek and attempted to walk toward the hallway but Derek had other plans.
"Mer?" Derek pulled out of Meredith's arms and stood in front of her. "You my wife, right?" Derek pouted. Meredith tried not to laugh at his face.
"No, I'm not" Meredith teased and Derek's face fall
"W..What, why not. I want you to be my wife, coz you so pretty" Derek continued to pout and sat on the couch again. Meredith was dying of laughter.
"oh, you think this is funny. I'm calling my mom" Derek took out his phone and quickly dialled his mom's number, before Meredith could even grab the phone.
"Derek? why are you calling so late" Carolyn's voice filled the lounge room.
"Mom, Mewedith says she's not my wife mom" Derek pouted. Meredith decided to let this play out. She was going to have fun teasing him tomorrow.
"What? Derek Christopher Shepherd are you drunk and where are you" Carolyn scolded.
"What! NO but I don't have a wife mom"
"Derek where's Meredith"
"She's right here and she's being mean"
"Give her the phone" Derek passed the phone to Meredith and crossed his arms.
"Hey Carolyn, sorry about that. Derek went out with the guys and it looks like they went all out."
"Oh gosh, I just know Mark is worse, I wish Lexie luck" Carolyn chuckles and said goodbye to Meredith and dropped the call.
"Come on Der, let's get you to bed. You can barely stand" Meredith helped Derek up.
Derek looked up, a goofy smile spreading across his face. "Mer! I'm fine. Really, I'm not drunk."
Meredith raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "You're not drunk? You can barely stand up straight."
Derek shook his head, swaying slightly. "Nope. Totally sober. Just a little... tired."
"Uh-huh." Meredith's tone was skeptical. "If you're so sober, then you won't mind walking in a straight line for me."
Derek chuckled, nodding enthusiastically. "Piece of cake."
He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself, then attempted to walk a straight line from the foyer to the living room. His feet wobbled, and he veered to the left, nearly tripping over a rug. Meredith stifled a laugh, reaching for her phone.
"Hold on," she said, opening the camera app. "I need to get this on video."
Derek paused, frowning. "Why? You don't believe me?"
"Nope. And I want to show you tomorrow, so you can see for yourself."
Derek sighed but didn't argue. He resumed his attempt to walk straight, this time even more exaggerated in his efforts. He stuck his arms out for balance, his face scrunched in concentration. Meredith couldn't help but smile as she recorded his unsteady progress.
"Okay, turn around and come back," she instructed.
Derek turned, his movements slow and deliberate. He managed a few steps before stumbling again, catching himself on the back of the couch. Meredith laughed softly, shaking her head.
"All right, I think we have enough evidence," she said, stopping the recording.
Derek pouted, but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Fine, you got me. Maybe I had a few drinks."
"A few?" Meredith teased, tucking her phone away. "You smell like a distillery."
Derek grinned sheepishly. "It was Mark's idea. You know how he is."
Meredith nodded, stepping closer to him. "I do. Come on, let's get you to bed."
Derek wrapped an arm around her shoulders, leaning on her for support. "You are my wife, right?
"Yes I am Der," she replied with a smile.
"I knew it" Derek smiled "you are the best"
"I know"
He chuckled, his head resting against hers as they made their way to the bedroom.
As they reached the bed, Derek collapsed onto it with a groan. Meredith pulled off his shoes and covered him with a blanket, brushing a stray hair from his forehead. He was already half-asleep, his breathing steadying.
Meredith stood there for a moment, watching him. Despite his drunken state, she felt a warmth in her chest, a reminder of why she loved him so much. She leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to his temple.
"Goodnight, Derek," she whispered.
She turned off the light and slipped into bed beside him, feeling his presence beside her as a comforting constant. As she drifted off to sleep, she couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow's video would be a humorous reminder of tonight's antics.
