In the woods, me and Luna are feeding the thestrals, we had grown quite close within the ten minutes of meeting each other. She was the kind of person with whom I can just have a conversation that isn't about our lives, we would talk about the animals that peaked our interest. Never once in our conversation did me or her say "I" which is surprisingly relaxing to think about.
I hear twigs snap and some heavy footsteps behind us and I immediately panic.
"Sorry professor! I know I'm not supposed to be out here, please forgive me!" But there was just a chuckle that left the professors mouth, well actually it wasn't a professor, it was Harry.
"Hello, Harry Potter." Luna said, I sigh in relief as we both turn around to face the boy.
"Your feet." We all angle our line of sight down to me and Luna's feet. "Aren't they cold?" Harry asked.
"A bit." Me and Luna say. "Unfortunately, all my shoes have mysteriously disappeared." Luna says, not a hint of sadness in her voice, I like the cool sound of her natural tone, it's quite relaxing.
"And I took mine off in solidarity." I added when Harry looked over to me to hear my explanation.
"We suspect the nargles are behind it." Luna says and we look at each other and chuckle, Harry looks plain confused, he keeps that face as he looks over to the creatures that we were feeding.
"What are they?" Harry asked.
"They're called thestrals." Luna answers while I grab another piece of meat to feed to the creature.
"They're quite gentle, really, but people avoid them because they're a bit..." All of our gazed meet with the baby who was trying to stand up, and badly failing to do so.
"... Different." Harry says, I could see in his eyes that he wasn't to different from these creatures.
"But why can't the others see them?" Harry asked, him and Luna had started walking towards the baby, while I stayed comforting one of the adults.
"They can only be seen by people who've seen death."
"So... you've known someone who's died then?" Harry asked, slowing his words in hope Luna won't be offended by them, although Luna isn't offended by much.
"My mum. She was quite an extraordinary witch, but she did like to experiment, and one day, one of her spells went badly wrong. I was nine." She says, keeping her calm tone.
"I'm sorry." Harry says, a look of sympathy in the relation to him loosing his own mum, although he didn't know her first.
"Yes, it was rather horrible. I do feel very sad about it sometimes. But I've got dad. We both believe you by the way." The baby thestral screeches at them lightly. "That He Who Must Not Be Named is back and you fought him, and the Ministry and the Prophet are conspiring against you and Dumbledore."
"Same." I say, to be fair I hadn't heard much from the Prophet, they got Dad villainised, so since then I haven't read a single page, also I have been knocked out for a year.
"Thanks. It seems you're about the only ones that do." I walk up to them and my and Luna bend down to get to eye level with the baby.
"I don't think that's true." Luna says, as she chucks an apple for the baby to eat.
"But I suppose that's how he wants you to feel." I say.
"What do you mean?" Harry asks.
"Well, if I were You Know Who, I'd want you to feel cut off from everyone else." I hear a shout from behind us.
"Y/n M/n L/n!" I look back and see a frantic Charli racing towards me.
"What did I say about you running off!?" She said, grabbed my arm and pulled me back out of the woods, I wave sadly at the look of concern on both Harry and Luna's faces.
"You need to be at your tutor lesson right now, Draco's waiting for you!" I roll my eyes, give a quiet 'hmph' and then stand up and start walking to help Charli out. It started pouring and me and Charli's outfits were drenched.
Once we had made it to the safety of the Slytherin dormitories, I was met by Draco sitting with a stack of three books, we had eliminated one if our first few lessons.
I sat down next to him and asked "Should we be in the potions classrooms so we don't make a mess of in here." I briefly tilt my head towards the cauldron, sitting calm and still upon the coffee table. He shook his head slightly, so I nod and reach into my satchel to grab my parchment, ink pot and pen.
I write some brief notes when he reads chapter one aloud. He pauses half way through and I look through my peripheral to find that his eyes had drifted up off of the book and onto me. I smile to myself and clear my throat, hinting for his to keep reading, I stifle a giggle when he shakes his head and looks down at the book wide eyed.
Once we had finished that book, it went faster than the first one, only taking two sessions we head over to the dining hall. We were up all night studying for our Owl's together, and by the tiredness I was collecting from the other students, I could tell they had done the same.
Hermione runs up to me, she seems energetic so I guessed that she didn't stay up all night, she whispers in my ear a peculiar request.
"Meet at —- in hogsmeade when we have the next field trip." I nod and continue my day as if nothing happened.
