Avery choked on air. Someone died there? She didn't even know the cause of death, but it still shook her to her core. Maybe it was a sickness or something, but seeing how well of the Hawthrones were, There was no way they couldn't have afforded a cure. There were too many possibilities for Avery to understand.

Avery took a deep breath, and left the table without a thought or even saying a word to you.

"Avery!" You called her, but she didn't stop for you.

You gave Thea a glare which she just smiled in response.

"Avery, wait!" You called again, following in her direction.

You slipped on the hallway after Avery made a sudden turn to the right. Once you had gotten up, you then heard Xander's voice and followed it. Avery was holding a metal dragon while Xander noticed you, which made Avery turn her head as well.

"Hi, y/n! I was just inviting Avery to the refectory, wanna come with?" Xander excitedly asked you when you reached them.

"Refectory?" You crossed your arms.

Xander grinned. "It's prep school for cafeteria."

"Please, prep school isn't a language." You shook your head.

"Hah, next you'll be telling me French isn't a language." Xander replied as you rolled your eyes.

The metal dragon let out a wisp of smoke out of it mouth. Xander and you both looked to Avery, who had just been quiet the entire time holding the dragon.

"Are you okay? You asked.

Xander questioned. "Thea got to you, didn't she?"

Avery pushed the metal dragon into you your chest, like she was afraid it would explode. "I don't want to talk about Thea."

"As it so happens. " Xander said. "I hate talking about Thea. Shall we discuss your little tête-à-tête with Jameson last night instead?"

"You did something with Jameson?" You leaned forward, not even trying to say those words Xander said. But you knew it wasn't a good thing.

"It wasn't a tête-à-tête." Avery denied, avoiding your question.

"You and your grudge against French." Xander got more focused. "Jameson showed you his letter, didn't he?"

"Jameson thinks it's a clue-"

"Don't worry, Y/n." Xander patted your shoulder. "We'll let you know later."

Xander nodded in a direction. "Come on." He began walking somewhere, expecting you two to follow him.

"I used to lose." He said as he turned a corner. "On Saturday mornings, when my grandfather set us to a challenge, I always lost. I was the youngest. The least competitive. The most apt to be distracted by scones or complex machinery."

"But?" You felt that there was more to what he was saying.

"But while my brothers were trying to take one another down in the race to the finish line, I was generously sharing scones with the old man. He was awfully chatty, full of stories and facts and contradictions. Would you two like to hear one?"

You tapped your chin. "I don't see why not-"

"A contradiction?" Avery asked.

"A fact." Xander answered, raising his eyebrow. "He didn't have a middle name."

"What does that have to do with anything?" You didn't get why the old man didn't have a middle name. You were sure when Avery let you read her letter you saw in the initials he had a middle name.

"What?" Avery was confused as well.

"My grandfather was born Tobias Hawthrone." Xander told you both. "No middle name."

"I still don't get it." You looked over to Avery. She seems to have been deep in thought.

She finally spoke are a minute or two. "If I asked you to show me your letter, would you?"

"Now, where would the fun be in that?" Xander then stopped in front of a big, brown door. "You'll be safe from Thea in there. There are some places even she dares not tread."

"So she's scared of libraries?" You snorted, looking at the design of the door.

"The archive." Xander corrected you. "It's prep school for library- not a bad place to hang out during free mods if you're looking to get some time alone."

"Nah, I'm afraid the nerd would infect my brain." You pointed to your head. Avery and Xander couldn't tell what was with your humor. If they didn't step in a library, you made fun of them. And when they were in the library all the time, you still made fun of them.

"You coming or not, Xander?" Avery said, pushing the door you were leaning on making you trip back a little.

"Not cool, Ave." You stood up straight, now sure you wouldn't make the mistake of leaning on something Avery could push.

"I can't." Xander closed his eyes, shrugging. He didn't explain any further and just walked away. So was he also afraid of libraries as well?

"Anyways, Ave." You snapped your fingers. "You gotta catch me up with this stuff. Like Jameson and what that brain was thinking about a second ago."

You pushed open the door for her.

"Okay fine." Avery sighed with a smile.
