Something purred quietly by my ear stirring me in my sleep.
"Hmm," I murmured and turned my back to the noise. The noise kept burring around me and laid on my back letting my eyes flutter open. That's when I noticed I wasn't out on the street like what I last remembered. I shifted my hands and felt the soft plush comforter I was draped under. I sat up in the bed and looked around. I was in a dark grey room with metallic black floors. My blankets were different shades of green and there were two windows facing away from me, their curtains drawn shut. The room was still dark but light seeped through under the crack in the door across the room.
I got out of bed, my bare feet brushing against the cold steely floor. Wait, where were my shoes? I reached the door and slid it open letting it quietly swing open on its hinges. I walked out into the hallway and looked both ways. On the left the hall took a turn and disappeared behind a corner. On the right, a couple yards away it opened into a wide lobby where I could make out part of a sofa and a balcony looking over a fireplace. I could hear laughter as familiar voices exchanged jokes.
Suddenly, a throbbing pain shot through my head and I grasped my fist against my temples. My eyesight started going black and my ears were ringing. Soon the ringing turned into an unbearable shriek that felt like someone was blowing my mind apart from the inside. All other sound was blocked out and the joyful faded away as my vision closed in to complete blindness. I fell to the ground. I couldn't tell if I was screaming or not but I should have been. Then the pain numbed my entire body and I was out.
I opened my eyes again and I was back in my bed with the green colorful comforters. I groaned and grabbed my head trying to stem the still very present pain in my head. It wasn't as intense as last time but more of like an aftermath.
"Quinn?" A familiar voice murmured. I jumped slightly and snapped my head in the direction of the voice. A couple feet away in a chair I didn't notice before was Steve. He appeared to be asleep, his brows furrowed together in concern. A huge wave of relief washed over me. I know I shouldn't be here but I was just glad I wasn't in the hands of Hydra, because quite honestly, I didn't know where I was when I first woke up.
I laid in bed staring at the ceiling until Steve woke up. He didn't notice I was awake at first but then I turned my head and met his eyes. I gave him a weak smile and tried to push myself up. His eyes grew soft and he stood up brushing off his pants. He placed the back of his hand on my forehead.
"How do you feel?" He asked concern filling his voice.
I smiled and leaned into his hand, but then pulled away quickly. "My head," I whispered.
He sat on my bed and grabbed my hand. He met my gaze again, but this time he quickly looked away and found sudden interest in the floor. I examined his arm that was now wrapped in a white adhesive.
"I'm sorry," I said quietly. Steve looked up at me almost shocked.
"For what?" He laughed, his tone soft and sincere. "You literally have nothing to be sorry for."
I frowned. "For your arm... I really didn't mean to hurt you."
A small smile played across Steve's lips. "Quinn, what are you talking about?"
"I- I shoved you... I didn't know how it happened, and I hurt you." Just as the words left my mouth I felt extremely dizzy and my eyes fluttered.
"You didn't do that, I was shot when we were attacked from the chopper. Do you remember our mission?"
I frowned but nodded. "Yes, and Clint was shot and he- he didn't wake up and I shoved you."
"Quinn," Steve looked puzzled as he studied my face. "When we were attacked Clint was shot, but you somehow helped him hang in there until we got to the hospital. Clint was fine, but you weren't you. After that you totally elapsed, right there in the chopper, and your brain went into total lock-down and you fell into some kind of coma."
"What? No- how-"
"You were burning up at an impossible temperature and we all thought you would die. Tony insisted on bringing you back here, he said he didn't trust doctors. You must have woken up last night while he had you hooked up to a machine of his that regulated your heart rate and brain activity. The sudden disturbance probably caused you chronic head pains and-"
"Steve what are you saying? I know what I saw... it was so real." I stuttered, still denying everything I thought I felt.
Steve breathed in and put a hand on my shoulder. "Quinn, you have been out for the past five days..."
"Then, then Clint..." I couldn't help but smile. Clint was alive and I wasn't a monster. I looked up for a moment and looked around the room, the light that faintly shined through under the door, a small painting hanging in the corner. It was just a dream.
"Yeah he's fine, but you almost died!" Steve said laughing at my sudden happiness. "You really need to pay attention to yourself now. Whatever you did to help Clint, you almost killed yourself doing it."
"I've been hanging around you too long then Cap," I laughed. Then suddenly Steve's last phrase sunk in and my smile faded. So I really was... something. I didn't know what I was, but I definitely wasn't the me I thought I was. Something happened back at Hydra, something that changed me. I didn't know what it was. But I needed answers... and I knew the person I could get them from.
