I stood in front of the tall mirror, gazing at my rugged reflection. My hair was in its usual dark waves and my eyes were crazed and I had dark circles under my eyes. My clothes were now covered in dirt and my shoulder ached from the shrapnel blast back at HYDRA. I pulled out my small duffel bag from under the small bed in the corner. I switched out my clothes and slipped into a dark evergreen short sleeve with dark pants and my leather boots. I rolled my sleeves up and tucked my pants into my boots. I turned back to the mirror and pulled my hair back revealing the black and blue of my bruises. The looked just as bad as they did in my dream. This was the first time I really looked at them since then and I winced just looking at them. Anger built up inside me again and I wanted to hurt that stupid Maximoff boy.
The door opened quietly behind me and I watched Steve stand in the reflection behind me. He met my eyes before gazing down at my neck.
"He did that?" he asked, his jaw clenched.
I quickly swept my hair back over my shoulders, trying to hide the marks. "Come on," I said, turning to face Steve. "Let's go find this bastard Van Strucker and get some answers."
We walked silently through the streets, trying to find the place JARVIS described to us. As we walked through the crowded I watched as life buzzed around the city. Children played in the sidewalks, giggling hysterically at one another. People bustled about small street markets bargaining with one another. A light May breeze blew flower petals about the stone paved streets, leaving the stone streets a light pink and the sun sending shadows dancing across the street and trees.
After at least an hour of walking I wondered if we were getting anywhere, if JARVIS gave us accurate information. We neared the outskirts of the city and the land opened up into a blue expanse of ocean and white foamed waves. I frowned and looked around. This couldn't be right. I glanced sideways at Steve expecting the same confused expression, but his eyes were cold and straight forth. He was staring out into the water and I followed his gaze. A huge crater ship moved sluggishly across the water almost two miles out. I could faintly make out the HYDRA symbol plastered in white across the board's star side. My heart fell instantly. We would never get all the way out there.
When I came back to my senses Steve was no longer at my side. I looked back down the beach and saw him dragging a small dingy down the beach from a small boat port.
I suppressed a smile and made my way over to him. Then my heart fell once again when I looked over the pathetic thing; small rickety boat with a shoe box sized motor. A sudden wave of anxiety washed over me and goosebumps formed on my arms.
Steve drug the boat into the water and motioned for me to follow. I hesitated. "That doesn't look safe."
Steve blinked. "We came all this way to break into a high tech military base and you get cold feet over a boat?"
I realized how stupid I sounded and pushed that still quiet fear back inside me. "I was just kidding."
Steve raised an eyebrow but said no more. We raced quietly across the water, neither of us talking. I went over the plan in my head multiple times, trying to stay focused but I couldn't. I watched the water lap the sides of the boat hungrily, sea foam spraying into my eyes making it hard to see. Stop Quinn, focus.
Suddenly a deep groaning noise came from the boat. I snapped my head up and noticed the boat was slowing gradually.
"No," I whispered. "No, no, no."
The boat came to stand still and leaned back in my seat dejectedly. I leaned over the side of the boat and paddled my hands the water uselessly. I hung my head over the edge of the boat and looked back at Steve who was now taking his shirt off. He looked at me a bit sheepishly and threw his shirt at me before grabbing his bag.
"Up for a swim?" Steve asked a distant smile playing across his pale lips.
I stared at him blankly trying to decipher whether or not he was joking or serious. "You're and Army boy not a freaking Navy SEAL."
Steve smiled down at me coldly. "A mutant super human Army boy."
Before I could protest Steve wrapped an arm across my waist and we plunged into the water. I squirmed and gasped for air, sputtering as water flew up my nose and down my throat. My vison faded again but this time from utter fear. I dug my fingernails into his back and buried my face into his firm chest. My mind flashed back to my childhood, memories I never wanted to uncover. I felt like screaming and felt tears forming in my eyes.
I felt Steve shift wrapping his arm around me tighter, probably sensing my uneasiness. No it was much more than uneasiness. I felt like dying. Suddenly everything went black. When I woke up I was laying against a crate. Steve climbed over to me. I looked down at the water just a few feet below us. We must be on the ship, the lowest level by the mucking area. Steve grabbed my hand.
"Are you okay?" He asked a bit concerned.
I nodded. "Just... tired."
He raised an eyebrow. "You're afraid of water?"
"What? N-no, I never said that. I was just tired." I stammered, the sea breeze blowing through my messy waves.
Steve shook his head slightly still not convinced and pulled his wet shirt back over his head and reached a hand out to pull me up. "Let's go. It's getting dark."
