The sun had long since disappeared beneath the sea line and Steve and I were pacing quietly down the dark hallways. I clutched my gun holster waiting anxiously for someone to jump out or ambush us. Thank goodness Steve thought of all the supplies like weaponry. Me being me, I would have forgotten everything but food.
As we neared the fifth floor we came to an outlet with a forked path. Our plan was to head straight to the control room and hit it off from there, but when I saw the confusion flash across Steve's face I realized we were in a pinch.
"Left?" I whispered quietly.
Steve glanced between the two. "Right,"
He headed off into the right corridor, but for some reason I felt it was a bad idea. Something told me to go left. I stood my ground and waited for Steve to catch on.
"Are you coming?" He turned back to me, annoyance mingled in with the gentleness of his voice.
"I really think left is the way we should go..." I trailed off uncertainly. I couldn't explain it, just... I just knew that if we went down the right corridor something bad would happen.
Steve shifted uncomfortably. "Agent, I have been a soldier all my life. I think I know a trap when I see one and I feel this is the way to go."
I took one more glance at the left corridor and gave Steve a curt nod. I pushed the bad feelings deep inside myself and followed him through the dark hallway. After all, my past judgments had gotten my family killed. I think it would be wise if I gave someone else the reigns. But the further we went into the hallway, my heart raced and the bad feelings returned.
After about ten minutes of walking, a silver door shone vibrantly through the hazy darkness. Steve gave me a knowing smile as if to say "I told you so," I realized the door was the same door JARVIS had showed us as the control room panel. Our destination. Steve reached into his left pocket where he kept a planting explosive. We would leave it by the door, set it then move as far down the hall as possible. This way, it would either kill or stun whoever inside and blow open the entrance. Just as we were to reach the door, my feet came to an utter stop. Up ahead, something flashed across the passageway just a few inches below the ceiling. Then again. And once more.
Steve kept padding along, the bomb in hand, and I had just enough time to whisper, "Wait,"
He turned to face me, his eyebrows furrowed. He opened his mouth to say something, but was suddenly knocked to the side in a flash.
"Steve!" I pulled my gun and ran to his side. A red rash ran all the way across his neck and another across his wrists.
"What-" Suddenly a force small but quick knocked me against the wall. A sudden jolt of pain shot through my wrists and across my neck. I screamed and shot blindly into the air at the unseen attacker but I felt my body start to fade and my eyes began to flutter. I sank to the ground next to Steve and let my head fall into his lap. The door in front of us flew open and in the doorway stood three figures. Light flooded into the hallway revealing Steve and I. Something the size of a softball buzzed over my head and fluttered just by one of the figures heads.
Someone laughed, a cold yet hearty laugh and spoke in a thick Russian accent. "Our party guests have arrived."
