*** Hey guys, I am so sorry. I had this chapter saved on my computer for five days now, but I just had a rough week and didn't really feel like doing much. I am trying to fit a writing lapse into my schedule so you guys wont have to wait and wait. I will try to have that up on my next update. Anyways... speaking of next update, expect it either tonight or tomorrow. I had it down for a while and this one is pretty long. So enjoy, and vote and comment! ~Mare Xx ***
As soon as we left the alley we were met by a refreshing breeze and moonlit streets. Cherry blossom petals drifted across the stone roads and everything was silent. There was literally no evidence of a festival. But as I followed Pietro through the streets and buildings, I made out a faint glow in the sky ahead and a distant drumming sound. I took this time to take in Sokovia in all her beauty even without the festival. Everything was quiet and peaceful. It's hard to believe that this city was, is or is going to be at war.
The faint drumming sound grew louder as we neared the city's center just moments later. The lights in the sky grew brighter and soon we were right in front of the entrance. A huge banner stretched between two buildings inscribed with Russian. I was guessing it probably said something along the lines of starlight and festival.
Then we stepped inside and I let out a small gasp. It was as if the night had disappeared and day had come in an instant. People were laughing and strolling through the streets, small curio shops and games lined up outside every building and street corner. Blankets and chairs were set up on the curbs and children ran around waving silver glow sticks in the air. Above us Christmas lights strewn from building to building, creating some kind of tunnel effect. People hung out their windows shouting to one another and laughing.
"Wow," I breathed.
Someone came up to me and tapped my shoulder. I turned around and was met by an old man with silver hair and warm brown eyes. He grinned and held out a small lantern to me. It was small yes, but it was beautifully decorated with silver tinsel and tiny little jewels. It had two openings on the top and bottom and inside held an unlit candle. My smile grew as I mentally reached out for it but remembered I had no money.
I shook my head hoping he understood I had no money, but the old man continued to smile and pushed the lantern into my hands.
"A gift," he said, his accent thickly laced in his voice.
I gave him a meaningful smile and enclosed my slender hands around the lantern. "Thank you,"
We continued walking through the streets, taking in everything around us. Pietro had mentioned nothing to me about Sokovia until I brought it up and I was glad I did. This was beautiful. The steady drumming we heard before was now in full swing and I noticed a small band lined up on one of the street corners. It was mostly composed of flutes and drums but the noise was more beautiful than any music I have ever heard. I stopped in front of the band for a minute listening to the sweet sound.
"It's supposed to resemble the stars in a way I guess." Pietro said in my ear.
And it did. It was simple and soft like the stars but sweet and beautiful as well. After a few more moments of listening to the music we began walking back down the streets. After a few blocks, the lights and music began to fade and the houses around us were dark.
I paused a moment and looked back at the lights and festival behind me. I sighed and thought what the Avengers were doing right now. How I wished they were here with me. I smiled to myself at the thought of the circus crew, also known as earth's mightiest heroes, walking around some festival in Sokovia. Then a rouge image of Steve's smile crossed my mind and I mentally crumpled. Steve.
