Shadowed punishment

"Wednesday Addams! I would like to speak with you privately!" Professor Thornhill shouted at Wednesday from across the quad. Wednesday was amused at the sight of her, glaring and red in the face. She was mad. And Wednesday knew exactly what she was mad about.

Wednesday crossed the quad cooly as she ignored the gazes of the students around her. They all watched as Thornhill pulled Wednesday along fast paced and furious. Wednesday didn't utter a single word as Thornhill started steaming out of her ears in anger as she rambled on and on.

"Wednesday! I am extremely disappointed in your behaviour! This was so irrational of you! Incredibly out of character! How could you vandalize school property!..." Wednesday was so impossibly disinterested by everything professor Thornhill had to say. Though Thornhill's tone was laced with outrage and concern, Wednesday felt that even if she put in every ounce of effort she had into caring, nothing would come up.

Thornhill sighed, "Though you did save the school and this isn't nearly big enough to earn you an expulsion. But you're going to do some community service, and since I know how excited you are when it comes to social interaction, I've already spoken with the mayor and you'll be volunteering at Pilgrim World." Wednesday sighed and looked down, delighting disappointment. "For a week might I add."

Wednesday glanced up through her eyelashes at Thornhill's disappointment. When Thornhill finally excused Wednesday, she walked away, biting backs smirk. How the world was predictable and everything fell into place for Wednesday Addams.

As Wednesday made her way through the corridors after picking up her things, she was headed to fencing. "Wednesday wait up!" She heard the voice of Maria Sweless call from behind her. Wednesday came to a halt as she turned on her heel to be met with the out of breath girl.

Her hair fell down in disarray in front of her face. She picky blew it out of the way, "what was that?" She asked breathily. Her eyes were concerned, "are you okay?"

Wednesday's lidded eyes stared into hers, "it was nothing. I got into a bit of trouble, a punishment was given. And I have every intention of serving it." Maria gaped at her, "and you're sure you're okay?" She double checked. "I'm alright Maria. Stop pestering me." Wednesday responded.

Maria stepped back, her head hung lower. "Oh...alright." Her voice turned soft and she fell into step beside Wednesday who had already began walking. Wednesday eyed Maria from the side and thought about saying something to her for a moment before twisting her tongue and not saying a word.

"What type of punishment is working at Pilgrim a world?!" Enid shouted, outraged. Wednesday had caught her up and the sole thing she could focus on, was the fact that Wednesday's punishment was what she prayed for on every outreach day. "Enid. I'm not you." Wednesday pointed out.

Enid nodded, but her melodramatic personality took over once more. She threw her hands up into the air, "but still! How? Like- if I done that they'd have me mopping and scrubbing the halls, washing the windows, probably picking up wild animal poop that nobody cares about. But you? You get to socialize and probably sneak in a few fudge bites!" Enid continued to ramble on as Wednesday shook her head at her in slight amusement.

Wednesday zoned out, staring at her typewriter. She hadn't written a single thing recently. She sat down in front of it for an hour every day, the hour Enid knew- or thought- was her writing time, so she left the dorm. Leaving Wednesday alone for that allotted hour. And Wednesday placed her hands on the keys, plots racing through her mind. But when she went to type, her mind went blank, her fingers ceased and nothing, absolutely no ounce of creativity, seeped out.

Wednesday found herself getting up to go knock on Xavier's door. But stopped herself before she continued to be let on by her own fantasies. They were in a rough patch at the moment. Though she had to admit, her lack of writing was most likely due to her lack of sleep. But the only medicine she had for her insomnia, was currently one large contributing factor to her misery.

How ironic.

"Wednesday?" Enid snapped her out of it. "Are you okay? You've been so out of it." Wednesday didn't reply. "Wednesday?....Y-You good?" She asked again. "Never mind Enid. Let me just go to sleep." Wednesday brushed it off.

Enid didn't seem too convinced but caved since she was tired. Enid called dibs on first shower, leaving Wednesday to her thoughts, yet again. And though Wednesday's world felt darker and everything felt numb. Number than ever before. She was going to fix it. She was going to steal that book. And she was going to get Thing back.

Wednesday woke up with the familiar weight on her chest. She hadn't slept well that night, waking up gasping for air as if her lungs had been punctured with holes, the oxygen seeping away as her heart squeezed again and again.

Nightmares and guilt, remorse, mourning. It was all piling up on her, but she stifled her cries so she would not wake Enid. And she refused to go and see Xavier. She would not.

But today. Today she was going to go to Pilgrim World and her plan would be set into motion, she had no doubt. Enid still slept away peacefully, but Wednesday had to be there before opening.

She quickly got ready and left as silently as she could. She had hastily written a note for Enid and left it on her bedside table. Wednesday went to the cafeteria to get an early breakfast. She noted that only a few people were awake. She caught sight of Yoko and Maria together, kind of hidden away in a corner. They looked like they were enjoying themselves and truly in love.

But when their eyes became hooded and their faces began to inch closer, Wednesday quickly looked away. She recognized that look. It was one she had given Xavier and him to her. Xavier. He was half awake  and sitting by himself. Wednesday turned her back and decided she didn't need breakfast.

But not before Xavier caught sight of her and got up to follow after her. He cut her off as she was about to leave. "Why the fuck did you steal my supplies?" Xavier asked her. Wednesday just shrugged, "I had my reasons." She responded and tried to escape his suffocating gaze. "This is so unlike you...this sudden hate for that dude came out of nowhere." Xavier commented.

"What's going on?" Wednesday didn't respond. Xavier sighed, "Look...I know what I said was wrong. And I know it was terrible, I regret it. And yes, I admit that it had some truth to it." Wednesday scoffed. "B-but! I promise to communicate better with you and really try and respect how you feel and how you are. I see that you were trying and I was just being a jerk."

Wednesday looked away from him. But he grabbed her chin and tilted her head up, "Wednesday please...I miss you." Wednesday saw it in his eyes. She saw the emotion and she saw the truth. But she looked away and continued walking. Leaving Xavier behind her and putting Thing in front.

Xavier could wait.
