J + M is spray painted on the bridge above the highway
And I wonder if perhaps they were in love, or soulmates in a different way.
I wonder, what are their names?
Josh and Mariem
Maria and James.
I want someone to love me like that, in red permanent paint,
Against something firm and immovable that would always remain above the interstate.
Do you think if we did that, our love would stay?
Do you have faith in this soul tie and do you promise to love me on days
Where I am unbearable, where no amount of paint could ensure that this would last? I am asking you to say
That you'll love me longer than that bridge will be there, longer than the world will withstand
The detriment we've caused to it, tell me what I am;
That I am worth more than the damage, that you will love me through the change,
Because I am everchanging, chameleon soul, love me through the yellows and shades of grey.
Split a tangerine on a hot summer day,
I will share mine with you like all the poets say.
Bleed into me and show me that I can shine like you,
Turn this world into watercolors, sheer and beautiful, I will gladly make room for you.
Love me in the way that my ex could never do.
Love me in permanence, in silence, I will watch as you take off your shoes.
Lay beside me and paint pictures on the ceiling, tell me about all the shapes that you're seeing,
I will be here when you come back to earth, awaiting your landing.
I do not think they are people, I think it is utility paint,
But it feels like I know them even though I don't know their names.
I'd like to thank them, even if they don't love in that way.
It is a pretty thought to think that could be us someday.

PoetryLove once stopped me from writing this book, and I hope that whoever is reading this someday finds the kind of love that inspired me to finish it.
