Sunshine ventured out to the lounge when the ghulehs called on her with popcorn and chocolate. They had decided they would have a girl’s movie night and they wouldn’t take no for an answer. Itzal was grateful to them, as Sunshine needed that little push to get her back out of his room again. Before too long, he heard giggles coming from the sofas.
He was feeling antsy, so he figured he would run. He knocked on Omega’s door to see if he wanted to join him, but Seren answered.
“Oh, hi Itzal, how are you doing?”
“Okay I guess, thanks.”
“Omega is on guard duty,” she said carefully, watching him to gauge his reaction. “He's due to finish any time, though. Maybe give him a call?”
Itzal thanked her and did as she said, dialling Omega. He said he was just waiting for Dew to arrive and then he’d be straight up. A few minutes later, he appeared from the stairway. He didn’t ask how they were doing. The fact Itzal was going for a run made it obvious that she was doing better.
Omega smirked when he saw whatever it was he could see when he was reading people’s moods. Itzal tilted his head in question and Omega laughed.
“Looks like you’re doing better. And looks like you need to run off some frustrations.” Itzal didn't know how the quintessence ghoul did it, but he just shrugged and carried on walking to the woods. Omega jogged to catch up. “I’m glad you’re both doing okay now.”
Itzal grinned at him and took off running.
They ran along the inside of the perimeter wall and back through the woods. Itzal could feel the spark that Sunshine had found igniting in his blood. Being in the great outdoors like this made his ghoul nature more prominent, and the reappearance of her fire had made him happy. His true nature was rising to the surface.
A run was just what he needed right now because Sunshine wasn’t ready for much else yet, and he needed to let himself go for a while. He couldn’t even remember the last time he had truly embraced his wild side. It couldn’t happen much at all when he wore the collar, only when Santos forced it. Even then, he was under Santos' control, so he was never his true self.
Omega was on the same page. When Itzal looked back, he saw the icy blue fire burning in the bigger ghoul’s eyes. It got serious then, as their run turned into something more. It became a hunt.
Itzal zig-zagged and wove in and out of the trees, but Omega stuck with him. Sometimes he gained ground and sometimes he dropped back. Itzal pulled far enough ahead of him to turn to his shadow without being noticed. He flowed through the shadows of the trees before re-forming right behind Omega and tackling him to the ground.
They rolled around in the moss and leaves, snarling and scratching and snapping their teeth at each other. For those few precious moments, Itzal forgot his troubles and it took him back to the times he'd wrestled playfully and rolled around like this with his brothers.
It ended with Itzal straddling Omega’s chest, his teeth nipping gently on his neck. Omega was laughing.
“Okay, okay, you win!” he snorted through huffs of laughter.
Itzal rolled off him and lay on his back, looking up at the canopy of branches above them. His face was aching from grinning so much and he could feel his eyes were still glowing with the pewter fire of his shadow ghoul. He heard Omega sigh next to him and he looked over.
“What is it?” Itzal asked.
“Seren and Sunshine are going to be wondering what the hell we’ve been doing,” he chuckled. “I think we’re in for a busy night,” he said as he waggled his eyebrows. Itzal’s smile dropped, and Omega cursed as he realised what he’d said. “Shit, I’m sorry I didn’t think.”
“It’s okay, really. Fucking Santos,” he said, and took a deep breath. “He is not ruining my day today. I won’t let him.”
Omega laughed.
“You sound more and more like Sunshine every day.”
Itzal half smiled at him. He didn’t mind that at all. He jumped up and Omega followed suit.
“We’d better get back before they come looking for us. They probably think we’ve run off together!” Omega said with a grin.
Itzal laughed and shook his head, thinking that he should do this more often; no thinking, just feeling. His phone vibrated in his pocket and he picked it up. It was Secondo, and he sounded stressed.
“Can you come to the chapel? We need you.”
“Fuck,” he said, as Omega gave him a questioning look. “Looks like he’s ruining my day, after all.”
