The past couple of chapters from Sunshine's POV. Just to make it hurt that bit more 🖤🤷♀️
Sunshine had dreamt of her mother. They didn’t get to chat too often. The lines of communication back to her home dimension were unreliable, at best. But sometimes, she would dream of the fiery ghuleh, and it went a long way to quashing the homesickness she often felt.
She woke up on her bed, momentarily confused, because of the whispering.
Itzal.
Sunshine looked over, remembering how they'd fallen asleep together with a fond smile. Over the last week or two, the shadow ghoul had become so much more to her than just a lost soul she'd felt compelled to help. Her intuition told her early on that he was worth saving, despite Alpha’s warnings.
Sunshine just knew Itzal was something special, and her gut told her he was meant to be a big part of her life. Her gut was never wrong.
Itzal often fidgeted in his sleep. Bad dreams plagued him, so Sunshine had grown used to the constant twitching and little sounds he made. It was understandable, given what he'd endured.
But Sunshine's instincts prickled when she focused her attention on him properly.
Dark brows knit together. Whispering through gritted teeth, as if he struggled to stop the words from escaping him.
Sunshine gently nudged his shoulder and tried to wake him up, but the whispers continued. His eyes moved quickly under his closed eyelids.
She sat up, shaking him more forcefully. The symbols on the black metal collar around his neck glowed with a dull, white light.
Something was seriously wrong.
“Itzal! Wake up!” Sunshine said insistently, shaking him harder.
The glow from the collar flared brighter, and she found herself shaking him with both hands now, desperately trying to bring him out of what she realised was some kind of spell from Santos.
“Aether! Dewdrop!!” she shouted, hoping her pack mates would hear and come to her aid.
Itzal's eyes flew open, and he trained his haunted mismatched gaze on her with intensity.
She breathed a sigh of relief and smiled now that he was back with her.
The relief was short-lived, however, when he sat up, pushing her away from him.
Sunshine toppled off the side of the bed, landing in her ass.
“Run Sunshine!" Itzal screamed. "Get the fuck away from me! Please!”
Her stomach dropped.
She knew, then. Knew this was not her Itzal. Knew not to hesitate.
Sunshine obeyed him.
She jumped up and flung open the door, taking one last, desperate look at the ghoul who'd flipped her world upside down. Her heart broke into a million tiny pieces as she turned away and sprinted down the hallway.
Aether and Dew jogged towards her, looking confused and sleepy.
“Sunshine? What’s wrong?” Dew asked.
