The special pancakes turned out to be regular pancakes, but Sunshine drowned them in melted chocolate and whipped cream. She laughed as she saw Itzal's hungry eyes when she placed the plate in front of him. He heartily tucked in as she joined him, and in no time at all, he'd had two more helpings. He sat back and recovered from the amount of food he had just consumed.
Itzal couldn't remember a time when he had eaten that much before and told her as much.
"You need to get some practice in, Itzal. It's Yule. Feasting is compulsory," she said teasingly.
He laughed and groaned, thinking how different this Yule would be from the previous ones. Santos had celebrated with his congregation and there had been feasts and festivals and orgies, but Itzal had not taken part in the feasting. The preacher put him on guard duty instead, or sent him to carry out errands that he couldn't do whilst the congregation was around. Of course, he was required at the festivals for rituals and he was required at the orgies; both of which he would have gladly skipped out on.
But this year, he would be with his newly found friends at the Clergy. He had always heard people joke about putting on weight over the festive season, but he supposed he could use to gain a few pounds. He wasn't exactly skinny, but he knew that compared to the other ghouls of his species, and compared to his younger days, he was much thinner. It didn't worry him either way, but he supposed the healthier he was, the easier he would find the work he did for Secondo when the time came.
They cleaned up the kitchen, and Sunshine grabbed his hand. She looked apprehensive, and he wondered what was wrong.
"So, I was thinking. There are going to be a lot of parties and things over the next few days. The stuff I raided from the other ghouls' closets for you is fine, but wouldn't you like to have some things of your own?" He frowned. Material things didn't mean a lot to Itzal. He had never had much of his own other than a few outfits and his books. "I was thinking we could go into town for a while and buy some essentials. Some new clothes and some stuff for your room?"
Itzal felt a spike of anxiety as he thought about leaving the Abbey for the first time since he had arrived there. So much had happened within the walls, and what was beyond them had been something to avoid. But now that Santos was gone, he guessed that the congregation would probably be scattering in a panic. He had heard Secondo say he was sending in some ghouls to check on the situation. Santos was the glue that held them together. He held the power and without him, there was no church. Itzal hoped that would be the case, at least. Sunshine noticed that he looked nervous about it.
"We can be as quick as possible. We don't need to go far. I'm sure Omega will drive us? We can be back before lunch," she said with a smile.
Itzal supposed he'd already conquered one fear today by changing into his shadow form. With Omega there, they would have backup if anything happened. He took a deep breath and nodded.
"Okay, we can go to a couple of places. Oh, but I don't have any money," he realised. Sunshine smiled.
"You do though! I got a text from Secondo earlier. He's sending you a package up. He said there's a credit card and a phone for you. I think he's getting annoyed with having to use everyone else as a messenger. He pays his ghouls pretty well, I've heard."
