Itzal and Sunshine took their dishes to the kitchen, which was looking rather chaotic already. Sunshine asked Rain and Mountain if they needed any help, but they assured her they were fine.

Itzal received a text from Omega asking if they would like to have some drinks with him and Seren in their rooms. Omega didn’t live in Terzo’s ghouls’ lair anymore. He shared a small apartment in the Abbey with Seren. He said he occasionally stayed in his old room when the ghouls had parties or movie nights, though.

They headed over there, taking a nice bottle of red wine from Swiss’ stash in the kitchen. Itzal looked worried when Sunshine swiped it, but she just laughed.

“Swiss has too much wine, anyway. He won’t notice if one little bottle goes missing. He shouldn’t leave them there if he doesn’t want anyone to drink them.”

When they arrived, Alpha was just leaving. He gave Itzal his usual hostile glare when he saw him and when he greeted Sunshine, Itzal saw the look of sadness and longing in his eyes and he almost felt sorry for him. He would have known about the fact that they’d bonded by now. Itzal had found out that gossip was a valuable commodity in the Abbey and Sunshine’s bonding to the slave ghoul had been particularly juicy gossip amongst the Siblings and other ghouls. She stroked Alpha’s arm and he sighed. Itzal didn’t like the fact that Sunshine felt bad about something that was beyond her control, though. He hoped Alpha would get over this soon and move on, because every time Sunshine saw him, she felt guilty.

They stepped into the apartment, and he smelled the spicy scent of mulled cider. These mulled drinks were new to him, and he found he liked them. They had something similar at home that they drank on special occasions, but the mulled drinks were nicer. Seren handed them a mug each as she gave Sunshine a sympathetic look.

“I’m sure Alpha will come around. He’s hurting. I think he seriously thought he would win you over eventually,” she said. "You know what he gets like."

Sunshine sighed and smiled at Itzal sadly.

“I get on really well with him and I think he just read too much into it. I only ever wanted to be friends with him. Alpha reminds me of my eldest brother, and I think that’s what drew me to him when I first arrived. He really helped me to settle in. He's a good ghoul, really. But as soon as you arrived, he started acting like such a dick.”

Omega laughed at that.

“He wasn’t prepared to have someone else move in on you. He thought he had all the time in the world to woo you, but then Mr. Tall Dark and Scary waltzes in from out of nowhere and he freaked out.” Sunshine laughed and Itzal smirked at Omega’s description of him. “I’m sure he’ll get over it. There’s a new Sister in the infirmary and I’ve seen the way she looks at him. He seems to be friendlier to her than the others, so here’s hoping,” he said with a shrug.

Sunshine snuggled into Itzal’s side and looked up at him.

“I hope he can find someone. He deserves to be happy. He just needs to be patient.”

Itzal didn’t wish him ill. He knew exactly what the ghoul saw in Sunshine and he couldn’t blame him for it. He couldn’t believe he’d gotten so lucky when she had chosen him out of all the ghouls and ghulehs she had probably met throughout her life.

They moved over to the sofas and sat down. It was nice to see the domestic side of Omega. The big quintessence ghoul doted on Seren, and the love between them was palpable. He wasn’t sure if humans and witches could bond with ghouls the way others of their kind did, but to him, it definitely looked like they were bonded. He would have to ask Omega about it next time they went out for a run.
